The Photo Essay: Part 2

Today, I will  be asking you to independently watch the following links. There will be two YouTube videos and four other links to Photo Essays found on The Toronto Star's website.

The Photo Essay is a series of images which tell as story or creates an emotional response from your viewer. As you described yesterday, the Photo Essay can be narrative (more story telling in a chronological sense) or thematic (a series of images depicting a similar message or theme).

  1. Watch the linked materials
  2. When viewing the Photo Essays on the  Toronto Star links, note and anwsers the following:
  • What viewpoint or angle did the photographer use?
  • Was a variety of focal lengths used to capture the images?
  • How did the photographer use techniques to create the images in the series?

Feel free to discuss these points independently or together as a group.

Evaluation

The Photo Essay: Part 2

Your final project for the class will be to plan and shoot a Photo Essay. This is a longer-term project which will require forethought and planning.

The first step in to decide on a topic. This is often the most difficult part, next to editing your final selections, in creating a Photo Essay.

Time Line

Topic selection > research > developing a shooting script > shooting > editing > layout

Each point on the time line will have a deadline, starting with topic selection. Please take the weekend to brainstorm some ideas. Your topic must be approved by the teacher before continuing. Next week, we will be looking at developing a shooting script.
