PERU WEBQUEST

Introduction

This WEBQUEST is designed to help you find information about PERU.  You will need to include some of this information in your booklet.  Some tasks will give you interesting information so that you can build your expert knowledge.

Pay close attention to the directions for each task.  You will need to write in your notebook. You may need to make a list or draw.

This QUEST consists of

1-following links to gather facts about Peru

2-soaring through Google Earth to view Peru up close

3-reading and responding to a children's book from Peru

You will need to read, write, draw, take notes, make lists, and maneuver through different links on the internet. Please do not browse the internet to find your own resources. Your final product will be your PERU POSTER plus any work in your notebook or on Schoology that is required.

PART 2--GET CLOSE WITH GOOGLE EARTH

For the GOOGLE EARTH part, you will be zooming in close, looking through pictures, and sharing what we see.

For this process you will be visiting GOOGLE EARTH to check out PERU.  You will have to scroll through many pictures and links to get big views and close-up views of the amazing features in Peru. If ever you get caught on a page and can't get back, just close the page and restart from the link below.

Pay attention to the scenes you view and be ready to talk about the interesting things that you saw during your travels.

---Follow this link to Google Earth so you can get a bird's eye view of Peru and its amazing sites.

1.   Once there, click on the WHITE BOX on the right.  This will take you to pictures of Peru. Click on them to enlarge them and scroll through all 20. Pay attention to anything that amazes you or you find interesting during the process of this viewing.

2.  Next, scroll below the first photo in the set and find the tile for Manchu Picchu and click to get a close up view.  (I had to go back to the link above sometimes to get back to the start of the pictures where I could find the tiles below.  The back button didn't always work. You can also just use the search button in Google Earth and put in Peru.)  When you get there, it's an amazing view! Fly around! Then zoom in and click on blue points of interests, the little camera icons.  The closer you zoom, the more will pop up. I found 7. Use your fingers to rotate the site. Clicking on these will bring you to close up pictures of that area of Manchu Picchu.

PART 3 - THE LITERATURE CONNECTION

For this part, you will be reading a picture book set in your country.  It will connect you to the culture and people of South America.  During class, you will listen to all the picture books in all 6 webquests. Each book has remarkable characters and illustrations. You will be making a mini-book that reflects your understanding of the read aloud.  When you do the writing for the mini-book, we recommend that you cut an index card to fit each page and write your answers neatly on the lines. This way, if you make a mistake, you can redo it before gluing it into the book. Make sure all of your answers are completely clear since the questions are not going to be copied into your book. Any reader should be able to know what you are talking about because you restated the question or clearly labeled your lists or charts.

This story is set in the Andes Mountains of Peru.  It is called LOVE AND ROAST CHICKEN.    It is a TRICKSTER tale.  A trickster tale tells about a small animal (or person) who uses brains instead of force to compete against bigger, fiercer characters. In the Andes, the trickster is often a little gray fox, but in this one the hero is a guinea pig. Guinea pigs are a part of the traditional life in the Andes. They used to run wild in the mountains, like rabbits. Hundreds of years ago, people started raising them for food. In street markets, they still sell guinea pigs for the same purpose!

After you listen to the story in class, you will have to make a small book that answers 3 questions.  We will construct the mini-book in class together. You will have to illustrate a cover with the title.

Ok, now that you have heard the story, you are ready to answer some questions and make a book.  There are few steps.

1--  We will construct the mini-book in class together. You will have extra cards in case you mess up your drawing or your writing.  You can cut the cards up and glue answers into the actual book so you don't write directly on the book pages. You can also use the lined side of index card pieces by trimming them so you can write neatly and straight across for each answer and then glue them to fit nicely onto the pages.

2--- Write the title neatly somewhere on the cover, not too big because you need to fit a picture too!  But make it colorful and thick-lined enough to stand out like a title should. Draw an illustration from the story and color it fully.  There should be no white space on your cover when you are done, like a real book cover.  It will look amazing!

3---Read the questions for page 1, 2, and 3.  (Remember you are not writing on the inside of the cover.) Write your answers on page 3-3 in your notebook before you plan to write in the little poster book.  On page 3-3 divide it into 3 sections by counting down 9 lines and tracing it and then counting up 9 from the bottom and tracing. Make sure you restate the 3rd question because it is a RADD format.  Restate, Answer, Detail, Detail.

Question 1 and 2---Pick the 2 best tricks Cuy did to Tio Antonio, the fox.  Describe them in great detail.  It will take more than one sentence and your writing should make it clear that you are explaining a trick by having details about how Cuy got caught and how he got out of it.  Do each trick on a different page.

Question 3--RADD.  In the end, why is Tio Antonio determined to stay away from Cuy?  Use two details from the tectd to support your answer.
