Patterns for Pre-K

Introduction

Guiding Questions:

  • What is a pattern?
  • What object is missing?

Learning Objectives:

Students will learn how to:

  • identify patterns
  • notice missing objects in patterns
  • fill in missing objects in patterns
  • duplicate patterns
Task

Students will be given a multiple model patterns and are required to duplicate and fill in the missing objects.

These tasks will be carried out with the use of physical models made of string and beaded shapes and interactive online pattern games for reinforcement.

Process
  1. Students will be given a model of beaded shapes placed on a string (Example: red square, blue circle, green star, red square, blue circle, green star) along with a string and a bin with beaded shapes,
  2. They will be required to duplicate the model by placing the correct beaded shapes onto the string provided in the same sequence as the model,
  3. After successfully completing the duplicate students will exchange models and carryout the process again,
  4. After students have completed duplicating all models they will be allowed to play an interactive online game called Patterns on the iknowit website.
Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on the accuracy of placing the correct beaded shapes onto the string in the correct sequence. Along with how well they score on the interactive game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the model activity with beaded shapes and string and the enrichment activity will allow students be able to identify patterns, notice missing objects in patterns, fill in missing objects in patterns and duplicate patterns.

An enrichment activity is "Patterns" which is an online game found on iknowit website https://www.iknowit.com/lessons/k-patterns.html
