PARTS OF A LEAF

Introduction

Leaves are parts of plants. In most plants, leaves are the major sites of photosynthesis, the conversion of energy from sunlight into chemical energy (food). Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen through stomata (tiny pores in the leaf). Leaves come in many sizes and shapes; they are often used to help identify plants. Some leaves are flat and wide; others are spiky and thin. Plant spines (like cactus spines) are actually modified leaves. Leaves are also responsible for respiration and transpiration.

Task
  • Write a short summary about a leaf part. You will be assigned to a group that will focus on one leaf part.

  • Pick a leaf species, draw it, and label the leaf parts and a short description of its function.

  • Give 2 examples of modified leaves.
Process

Part A. Writing a summary about one part

  • Each group will be assigned a different plant part. Each member must write a summary of the part and post to our class webpage under Class Discussions.

Part B. Drawing a picture

  • Pick an angiosperm species and draw a picture of it. Label each part of the leaf except for phloem and xylem. On your diagram, specify what species you picked. This drawing will be turned during class.

Evaluation

Summary: 25%

Diagram: 25%

Participation: 50%

Total Score: 100%

Conclusion

Congrats! You now have a better knowledge of plant parts and their functions.

Without plants, Earth would not be the same as it is today. So it's important that we understand how plants work, just like our own bodies, so that we can take steps to protect them. After all, they are living things, too.
