One of the disadvantages of increased technology use in Education

Introduction

Welcome peers,

In the last weeks, we all have been learning about the benefits and why it is so important to integrate technology in education. However, there are also some disadvantages that ICT in education brings. Therefore, we want to make you aware of the increased risk of Cyberbullying these days.

We hope you have fun to find out more and maybe also find another disadvantage that ICT in education has. :-)

Task
  1. How does cyberbullying get punished on the following platforms:

Zoom, and Microsoft Teams?

      2. (Optional) Find another disadvantage (or more) of ICT integration in education.

Process

1. Read the following information about cyberbullying:

UNICEF:

Most schools take bullying seriously and will take action against it. If you are being cyberbullied by other students, report it to your school.

People who are victims of any form of violence, including bullying and cyberbullying, have a right to justice and to have the offender held accountable.

Laws against bullying, particularly on cyberbullying, are relatively new and still do not exist everywhere. This is why many countries rely on other relevant laws, such as ones against harassment, to punish cyberbullies.

In countries that have specific laws on cyberbullying, online behaviour that deliberately causes serious emotional distress is seen as criminal activity. In some of these countries, victims of cyberbullying can seek protection, prohibit communication from a specified person and restrict the use of electronic devices used by that person for cyberbullying, temporarily or permanently.

However, it is important to remember that punishment is not always the most effective way to change the behaviour of bullies. It is often better to focus on repairing the harm and mending the relationship.

2. Create a PowerPoint presentation in which you will be present the information you found.

Class will split in two groups and will work together.

Please include the sources in your presentation!

Evaluation

The two groups will rate (1-5) each other on the following criteria:

Oral presentations are judged for

originality and creativity, organization of content, knowledge of material, clarity of artwork (charts, graphs, slides), and overall presentation.

Conclusion

In civilizations that have developed enough to have the technology to connect with others online, cyberbullying is a problem that is difficult to solve. Although it can happen to anyone, today's youth are the most frequently affected. If we can stop this horrible conduct in children before it develops, they are less likely to take that courses. Regrettably, this is not a simple task. This calls for schools, and parents in particular, to be aware of the issue and take appropriate action. Cyberbullying must be eradicated collectively, and it won't happen overnight.

Laws can be implemented to assist prevent cyberbullying if the government is prepared to acknowledge that it is an issue. Even still, this behaviour needs to be stopped right away by parents and schools; otherwise, legislation won't be necessary. Therefore, schools and parents should be aware of what children are doing online and on their phones and should take appropriate action if they are.
