Introduction
As you may or may not know many hydrocarbons occur in nature. In addition to making up fossil fuels, they are present in plants and trees, as, for example, in the form of pigments called carotenes that occur in green leaves and carrots. And today you`ll get to know how two of the fossil fuels - oil and gas had been formed.
Task
- Are oil and gas non-renewable or renewable natural resources?
- How you call the substance that is made out of marine organisms who died and settled down on the ocean floor in the absence of oxygen?
- What turns the fossils of organisms into oil and gas?
- Out of what at the molecular level oil and gas are made?
- How or why does oil and gas sometimes even reach the surface of the Earth?
- Why in the most cases the gas and oil make reservoirs?
- How does seismic surveys work?
- How you call energy recources that are curently difficult or expensive to extract?
Process
In the test there are 8 questions and only one correct answer. After you`ve answered them check out the correct answers and explanation in Evaluation.
Evaluation
- Non-renewable, because the time that it needs to form again is millions of years.
- Kerogen.
- Enormous heat and pressure, because over millions of years, the remains were buried deeper and deeper.
- Out of hydrocarbons - carbon and hydrogen.
- Because of the constant pressure and movement of the Earth`s crust. The oil and gas squeezes through the pores or spaces between rocks.
- Because they are trapped beneath the surface by impermeable layers or rock structures.
- They use reflected sound waves to produce a 3D view of the Earth`s structure.
- Unconventional oil and gas deposit. Unconventional oil mostly consists of a wider variety of liquid sources including oil sands, extra heavy oil, gas to liquids and other liquids which makes it harder to prepare for use.
If you answered 6 of 8 questions right, than you have mastered this subject.
Conclusion
Now you know how the oil and gas are formed and maybe it left a bit of a thought in your head why we should change all of our energy recources to renewable like sun, wind and wave energy.
Let`s think green and make our future better! :)
