Nutrients

Introduction

Have you ever wondered what makes a healthy diet? Why do we need to eat a variety of foods, and what roles do different nutrients play in our bodies? This WebQuest will take you on an exciting journey through the world of nutrition, helping you understand the vital substances that fuel our bodies and keep us healthy.

Task

Your mission is to work in transnational teams to research, analyze, and present information on the six major nutrient groups. You will:

  • Investigate the role of each nutrient in the human body.
  • Create collaborative presentations that explain the functions and health benefits of each nutrient.
  • Design informative materials.
  • Compile a categorized list of foods rich in each nutrient.
  • Share all findings and creations on the class Padlet for discussion and peer learning.
Process

Step 1 -  Group formation

Choose the transnational team you would like to join and find more instructions in the following Google Dochttps://docs.google.com/document/d/16uBe-ip8r5sfYa8FEe0nRCFV5i_RDHzzFKPaAUNjEDY/edit?usp=sharing

Step 2 - Research

Depending on your team's assignment, research the six major nutrient groups (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals or water). Use reputable sources such as nutrition websites, scientific articles and educational videos to gather information.

Step 3 - Create a presentation

Create collaborative informative presentations about the specific roles and benefits of each nutrient group. Use the templates given in the Google Doc above and add it to the Padlet: https://padlet.com/meddiet4health/nutrients-y1r7da052054sz2s

Step 4 -  Create informative material

In the same teams, making use of Canva, Postermywall or any other WEB2.00 tool, create informative materila i.e. a brochure that summarizes the functions and health benefits of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Post your designs to the above padlet.

Step 5 - Compile a Food List

Compile a list of foods rich in each nutrient and categorize them accordingly. You also post this in the above padlet.

Step 6 (Optional) - Food Labels

Use food labels for a better understanding of the nutrient content of different foods.

Evaluation
Criteria 5 - Excellent 4 - Good 3 - Satisfactory 2 - Needs Improvement 1 - Poor
Research Quality Demonstrates thorough research using multiple reputable sources; information is accurate and detailed. Research is solid with mostly reputable sources; information is mostly accurate and detailed. Research shows adequate effort; some sources lack credibility; information is generally correct. Research is limited; sources lack credibility; information has noticeable inaccuracies. Research is minimal or missing; sources are unreliable; information is mostly incorrect.
Understanding of Nutrients Presents clear, in-depth explanations of functions and health benefits of all six nutrient groups. Provides good explanations of functions and benefits for most nutrient groups with minor gaps. Explanations cover basic functions and benefits of nutrient groups but lack detail or clarity. Explanations are incomplete or unclear for several nutrient groups. Explanations are missing or incorrect for most nutrient groups.
Presentation Quality Presentation is engaging, well-organized, visually appealing, and uses the provided template effectively. Presentation is organized and visually clear with minor issues; follows the template. Presentation is somewhat organized but lacks engagement or has visual issues; template partially used. Presentation is poorly organized or hard to follow; minimal use of the template. Presentation is disorganized, unclear, or missing significant components.
Informative Material Design Brochure/material is creative, clear, accurate, and effectively summarizes nutrient functions and benefits. Material is clear and accurate with good design; minor details missing or unclear. Material summarizes basic information; design is simple or somewhat unclear. Material is incomplete or unclear; design is confusing or unattractive. Material is missing, inaccurate, or poorly designed.
Food List Compilation Comprehensive list of nutrient-rich foods, well-categorized and accurate. Good list with most nutrient-rich foods included and generally accurate categorization. List includes some nutrient-rich foods with some categorization errors or omissions. List is incomplete or poorly categorized with many inaccuracies.
Conclusion

By the end of this WebQuest, you will have explored the six major nutrient groups, understood their roles in human health and learned how to identify nutrient sources in our daily diet. You will also have developed skills in research, digital communication, collaboration and creative presentation, enabling you to share your knowledge effectively with others and make informed decisions about healthy eating.

This WebQuest was edited by a teacher of Gymnázium Cyrila Daxnera vo Vranove nad Topľou, Slovakia, as part of the activities of the "Mediterranean Diet for Overall Health" (MedDiet4Health) Erasmus+ project (Project number: 2023-2-EL01-KA210-VET-000183592).

By engaging in these activities, students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also develop practical and transferable skills essential for careers in food technology, health, nutrition and related fields. They enhance their research and analytical skills by investigating the functions, health benefits and food sources of the six major nutrient groups. Their digital literacy and creativity grow through the design of collaborative presentations and informative material, using web 2.0 tools. Working in transnational teams strengthens collaboration, communication and intercultural competence, while compiling and categorizing foods according to nutrient content cultivates organization, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, engaging with food labels and reflecting on nutrient information develops applied knowledge and practical decision-making.
