Nouns of Various Types

There are a number of different types of nouns, and some of them overlap. There are common and proper nouns, as well as concrete and abstract nouns; however, some nouns are both concrete and common, as well as concrete and proper. As you read on, it will become clear.

The words that refer to the most general things are called common nouns: a country setting, an evening of laughter, a puppy, and an umbrella

We enjoy swimming after breakfast.

Proper nouns are names that identify someone or something, such as a person or a location. Capitalization is used for proper nouns. Jesse is a proper noun because it refers to a single, unique instance of a thing, Jesse.

Delia, Dawn, Aunt Audrey, Honda, and Philadelphia are examples of proper nouns.

Collective nouns refer to a group of people or things: audience, team, bunch, family, class. When speaking of collective nouns, Americans consider them as singular, using singular verbs with them, such as the group dances happily. When speaking British English, both singular verbs and plural verbs might be used, as in the group dance crazily before the Queen.

Collective noun examples: government, jury, team, bunch, school, class, and room (the people in the room or building)

The team threw confetti when it was over.

Steve buys the band some sandwiches.

Meredith told the class she was getting married.

As previously stated, some nouns can be classified as belonging to more than one category when discussing noun categories. Some nouns are concrete and countable, such as raindrops and wedding rings, while others, such as the Atlantic Ocean and Alaska, are proper and uncountable.
