Introduction
Welcome, young detectives! 🕵️♀️🕵️♂️
In Word Town, nouns are all mixed up! Collective nouns are hiding, and abstract nouns are pretending to be concrete.
A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea (Khan Academy, 2016).
Your mission is to solve the mystery!
How can we identify and correctly use collective, abstract, and concrete nouns?
Task
You will:
- Identify collective nouns.
- Distinguish abstract vs concrete nouns.
- Create a paragraph with different types of nouns.
🎯 Include:
- 3 collective nouns
- 3 abstract nouns
- 3 concrete nouns
Process
Step 1:
Begin by watching the video about nouns and the different types provided in the resources below. As you watch, listen carefully to the explanation of collective, abstract, and concrete nouns. Pay attention to the examples given and try to think of your own examples while watching.
Step 2:
After watching the videos, read the information provided on the three types of nouns. Take your time to understand the differences:
- Collective nouns name groups
- Concrete nouns are things you can see or touch
- Abstract nouns are ideas or feelings
Step 3:
Next, look at the examples provided. Identify and write down the nouns you see. Then decide whether each noun is collective, concrete, or abstract.
Step 4:
Now it is your turn to practise. Create a short paragraph of at least 6 sentences, including at least:
- Three collective nouns
- Three concrete nouns
- Three abstract nouns
Make sure your sentences are clear and end with the correct punctuation marks.
Step 5:
Work with a partner or think independently to review your sentences. Ask yourself:
- Did I use the nouns correctly?
- Did I include all three types of nouns?
- Are my sentences clear and properly punctuated?
Step 6:
Finally, complete the interactive quizzes and activities provided below. These will help you practise identifying and using collective, abstract, and concrete nouns correctly.
