Introducing Patterns

Introduction

Introduction

Students and family members,

Today you will be working together to discover and explore some of your favorite patterns. Patterns are all around us, we just have to find them! Patterns are repeated cycles or similar relationships.  The concept that children should grasp in Kindergarten is that objects have "similarities". We will soon explore some NEW patterns, and work together to create basic patterns using everyday things.

Task

Task

We will be exploring several patterns. We will be observing and forming patterns.

These simple patterns will help your student be more aware of patterns and give more opportunities to create and extend patterns in daily life.

Process

Process

Step 1. To introduce this task, follow the link below and watch the attached video with your student. This video includes a fun song that your child can sing along with about patterns.

Step 2. Please be sure to write down what your student guesses what's next that they see/hear in the video on a sheet of paper.

Step 3. Now that you have practiced a few patterns from the video, discuss over the pattern that you found within the video with your student.

Step 4. Work with your student to create a few simple patterns that include shapes. Please write them on a sheet of paper and write their responses.
You can use this for ideas:

Try your best to create at least three new shape patterns.

Step 5. Now that we have practiced some shape patterns, we will be looking over some new patterns like colors!
Please go to the link below and look over some more patterns.

Step 6. Have your student come up with their own pattern (at least three to five) on a piece of paper.

Please send your students' responses to my email @ reshmiek@gmail.com.
