The following WebQuest activity is geared for second grade level. The students will learn the true meaning of Valentine's Day and create their own Valentine's Day card to be posted in the classroom wall for everyone to see, so be creative and create some wonderful artwork or card design. On the front of the card the students will write a minimum of two lines of what Valentine's Day means to them and in the inside of the card a short poem using examples found under resources (Credits).

Task

The class will create a Valentine's Day card using the supplies provided by the teacher. The card can be in heart shaped form or regular card form, it has to have an inside so the card can open up. On the front side of the card you will write what Valentine's Day means to you and on the inside of the card you will write a short poem in celebration of Valentine's Day. Below are pictures of examples of heart shape and regular cards should look like. They are just examples, you are to use creativity in creating your own cards.

Process

First the classroom will watch a short video"Kids define 'love' for Valentine's Day" under resources (Credits). Secondly students will individually be given computer time to research the different poem options, they will explore different websites under resources (Credits). Then the students will pick out a specific style of poem that they would use as a reference in creating their own Valentine’s Day poem. The students will then be provided with art supplies to create a Valentine’s card, they will be in groups so that the supplies can be shared and to avoid students getting up and disturbing others. Next, once the students have finished making and decorating their cards then they can start to write on the front cover what Valentine's Day means to them, then write the poem on the inside of the card. When the class has finished their projects, the cards will be displayed in the classroom walls for the month of February. At the end of the month, the students will get to take home their finished Valentine’s Day cards to share with their families and friends.
