The First Fleet

Task

You are a museum curator and have been asked to create a display using visual, audio, and written work about the history of the First Fleet. This display will be used to educate other students from schools, tourists and the general public. Use the resources to complete your task. Each of the activities that you complete will involve producing something. Each of these creations will be used in your final display.

Process

TASK 1.

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST FLEET

1.  Tuning in to students thinking (IBL) and Remembering (Blooms)

a)    Discuss with your group what you already know about the First Fleet and create a mind-map of your understandings.

b)    Watch the following YouTube video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnUNEkMsjfY and then answer the following questions:

  • What year did the First Fleet arrive in Australia?
  • Where in Australia did the First Fleet arrive?
  • Who was transported to Australia?
  • Why were these people transported to Australia?
  • How many ships were sent to Australia?
  • What were the conditions like on the ships?
  • Who was chosen to lead the ships?

Task 2.

2. Finding Out (IBL) and Understanding (Blooms)

a) You have been provided with a glossary of words that relate to the First Fleet. You are required to find their meanings using the resources below and then in an interesting way present the glossary and their meanings in your own words. For example:

  • A poster
  • Write a short story using the words
  • A song
  • Prezi
  • A PowerPoint presentation with illustrations

Task 3.

THE SHIPS

2. Finding Out (IBL) and Understanding (Blooms)

b)    Using the resources below find out what was life like for the convicts onboard the ships. You may present your findings in any way you choose. For example: poster, speech, Prezi

Use the following questions to guide you.

  • What did people do on the ships? (A typical day)
  • What problems did they face onboard?
  • How did they store food?

Task 4.

6. Acting and Applying (IBL) and Creating (Blooms)

c)    Now that you have an understanding of what life was like onboard the ships create an artwork that explains the conditions the convicts faced and how they felt.

Task 5.

3. Sorting Out (IBL) and Applying and Analysing (Blooms)

Using the resources below construct and illustrate a map that shows the journey of the First Fleet to Australia. This can be drawn by hand or can be developed using an online mapping program. Be sure on the map to include the names and dates of arrival at places.

TASK 6.

THE STORIES OF THE CONVICTS

2. Finding Out (IBL) and Understanding (Blooms)

a)    Each person in your group is to choose a convict to research. A list has been provided for you below of some famous convicts to choose from, however, if you like you may choose another convict of your liking.

  • Red Kelly
  • Elizabeth Thackery
  • Margaret Dawson
  • William Smith O’Brien

You are to answer the following questions:

  • What is the convicts name?
  • What crime did they commit?
  • What boat were they transported on?
  • How long was their sentence?

You now have two options as shown below:

4. Going Further (IBL) and Applying and Analysing (Blooms)

  • With another person in your group you are to compare and contrast the lives of your chosen convicts. Create a table of the similarities and differences between your convicts. For example were they transported on the same boat?
  • Imagine you are the convict you have chosen and write a letter home about your journey.

Task 7.

5. Synthesising and reflecting (IBL) and Evaluating (Blooms)

Many of the convicts faced illness and poor hygiene on their journey to Australia.

If you were able to improve these conditions what changes would you make?

This task requires you to evaluate the extent of the conditions the convicts faced, to think of appropriate and reasonable changes and to justify your reasons and ideas. You may present this task in any form you choose. For example: PowerPoint presentation, poster, video recording

Task 8.

6. Acting and Applying (IBL) and Creating (Blooms)

Using all the work pieces created from the previous tasks you are to create your museum display. You may create your display in anyway, however may like to use the following:

  • Tables
  • Tablecloth
  • Chairs
  • Computer

I have arranged for the year 3 classes to come into our room and have a look at your displays. Your task is to talk and teach the year 3 students about what you have created. You may like to show them the work pieces that you have created in order to learn this information. For example:

  • Task 1: Mind-map of the First Fleet, Questions about the First Fleet
  • Task 2: Glossary and meanings of words
  • Task 3: Information about 11 ships and their purpose
  • Task 4: artwork that explains the conditions the convicts faced and how they felt.
  • Task 5: Map that shows the journey of the First Fleet to Australia
  • Task 6: Convict stories, compare and contrast or letter from convict
  • Task 7: Presentation of how you would improve conditions for convicts on the ships
