ZooExhibits

Introduction

Our local zoo is wanting to add more animals to some of it's exhibits including the apes. Did you know that there are many different kinds of apes? We are going to explore two different types of apes, the gorillas and the chimpanzees to see which one to zoo should add. There is a lot to consider for the zoo including the behaviors of the animals, what kind of habitat they would need, how much space they would take up, and how much they would cost. We are going to do our best to help the zoo decide which type of ape they should add.

Task

Congratulations! Your team has been selected to help our local zoo decide which ape to add an exhibit for. Your team gets to investiagte the gorilla and the chimpanzee and chose which one would best benefit the community and the zoo.

Each team member will have one of the following important jobs.

1. Animal Expert: you will research interesting facts that contribute to the decision.

2. Habitat Manager: You will research what the best type of home is for each animal and what supplies are needed.

3. Budget Keeper: You will research how much the animal will cost to buy, feed, and house.

After completing your research you will get together with your team and discuss which ape would be best. You will then get to make a presentation for the zoo and try to convince them using your research to chose your ape.

Process

Now it's time to get started! Meet with your team and decide who will take on which job. Are you the Animal Expert, Habitat Manager, or the Budget Keeper? Now Follow these simple steps to complete your project!

Discuss your findings

As a team come together and talk about which animal was the best fit for your category and explain why (let everyone talk before you discuss). When talking about your animal talk about what you discovered about each animal and then give your recommendation. After everyone has talk you must come to a conclusion together on which ape would be best for the zoo to invest in.

Remember that you are look at the at the animals from the prospective of your job.

Create a Presentation

Now your group has chosen one of the apes and you are ready to make a presentation. You can chose from any of the following types of presentation:

Design a poster

Make a commercial

Create a brochure

Write a letter

or get any other ideas for your presentation approved by the teacher.

Once you have chosen the type of presentation make sure it includes the following information:

The name of the animal you chose, and an illustration or picture.

Three interesting facts about the ape.

Three reasons you should chose it over the other type of ape.

And anything else your group decides is important.

Remenber this presentation should be persuasive since you tyring to get the zoo to chose the ape that your picked. Make sure you have good information and facts to back up your oppinions.

Present

Now it's time to present! Make sure you have all of your information and materials ready to make your presentation. Your will first present your topic to the class and then we will have a group discussion and see if anyone has any other input to add. After you present to the class we will video the presentation and send it to the zoo along with a letter from the class explaining our findings.

Evaluation

Below Basic: Fully relied on team mates to do their research and come up with the findings. Did not use supporting facts to back up their oppinions. Shows very little knowledge of the subject when giving the presentation.

Basic: Did not complete their part of the research but engaged in the group conversation. Has facts but does not know how to use those facts to persuade. Shows a basic level of understanding about the animals but does not have all of the listed proponents for presentation.

Proficient: Takes part in personal research and group work. Has every proponent listed for presentation and in an orderly fashion. Shows that they can discuss the facts they found in a persausive way and met all requirements.

Advanced: Did extra research and lead group discussions. Goes into great detail on every proponent listed and is very organized. When giving presentation the student show extensive knowldge on the topic and has passion and is persuasive.

Conclusion

Amazing Research you are helping the zoo to decide which animal they should add to their exhibits! After we sent the presentation to the zoo we will just have to wait and watch for their decision! Your research could make the difference!

This would be a great way to get the students involved in the community and would be fun to take a field trip to the zoo after they chose which apes to add and then the class could see how their research helped!
