Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

This amendment is about people having the rights of freedom of speech also people have the rights of peacefully take a stand for what they against and that they want to change. Also make no law respecting an established of religion. , also the rights with evidence that the government is abusing its constitutionally limited power.

Some big ideas present in this amendment are- how the people took a stand to speak up what they wanted to change or speak their perspective about something peacefully.

This video is about how the first amendment says Congress can’t mess with religion, but actually, states are allowed to have establish churches. Most colonies had states supported established religion. Also allowed to speak up peacefully.

1. Why did the states want to ensure the Federal government did not establish a national religion?the government might well establish a national religion, protesters could be silenced, the press could not criticize government, and citizens could not mobilize for social change.

2. why were the freedoms of press, speech and assembly so important to the Founding Fathers?To protect this principle, the Founders established the freedoms of speech and the press in the First Amendment.

3.The equal protection clause has been used to by rom government suppression of speech, including speech that’s offensive, repugnant and even hateful
