The Giver- Creating Your Own Utopia

Introduction

Jonas's world is perfect.  He lives in a community where there is no hunger, fear, pain, welfare, or war. This webquest is designed to help you understand the concept of utopias (or dystopias).  Be sure to follow each step and complete each task as directed.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:  If you lived in a community similar to the main character of the book what would it be like?  What would the rules be?  How would it function?

Task

In The Giver, Jonas lives in a utopian community; a perfect world where there is no hunger, pain, sickness, hatred or conflict of any kind.  The price for such a society, however, is the loss of individual freedoms, including freedom of choice.  Now is your chance to reflect on the utopian society in The Giver and then create your own!

The year is 3010.You and your team members have been given the opportunity to start a new society on a deserted island that is fully equipped with all needed amenities and modern technology. The island is not owned or under the influence of any nation. It is the responsibility of your group to inhabit the island in any manner that you choose. By completing the following assignments and working cooperatively, your group will build the Perfect Society.

You are now going to create your own perfect community.  How does it function?  What is the government like?  What rules are enforced?  How is money and healthcare handled?
