Geometry within Structures

Introduction

Geometry is used all around us in the real world.  Polygons and the measures of angles, shapes, lines, and 3-dimensional figures appear everywhere.  Architecture is one example of how we use geometry.  As part of your task, you will search different sites of famous buildings.  After choosing one of the structures, you will identify geometric shapes found in the architecture you see, as well as write a 2-page typed report along with a visual aid for your presentation.

Task

Using the given resources below, you will research famous structures to examine the geometry that can be found within the architecture.  After choosing one building, you will need to:

  • Take a screenshot of the structure and open it within the app, "Educreations"
  • Using the app, create a verbal and visual recording as you label geometric shapes noted within your structure.
  • Your verbal recording should include:
    • the name of your structure
    • the location of your structure (be specific)
    • the year your structure was built
    • those responsible for designing and/or building your structure
    • the reason the structure was built
    • a description of the structure supporting how geometry is used in the architecture
  • Once you have completed your Educreation, you must choose to complete one of the following:
    • a completed text-marking of an informatinoal text that provides additional information about the geometry concepts of your structure
    • a model of your structure
    • a song or poem sharing additional information about the geometry concepts noted within your structure
Process

To accomplish the task, you will need to follow the steps listed below:

  • Use the given resources to view photographs of famous structures.
  • Choose one building you are interested in.
  • Take a screen shot of the structure and paste the image within the app "Educreation".
  • Using "Educreation", highlight basic information about your structure as well as the geometric concepts that you notice.  This can be done by tracing or drawing arrows to and labelling those noted geometry concepts.
    • Examples can include types of angles, types of two and three dimensional figures, parallel and perpendicular lines, similar figures, types of symmetry, and more!
    • Be sure to include all expectations listed within "Task" description.
  • As you label the geometric concepts, record your thoughts and observations
  • Once you have completed your Educreation, you must choose to complete one of the following:
    • a completed text-marking of an informatinoal text that provides additional information about the geometry concepts of your structure
    • a model of your structure
    • a song or poem sharing additional information about the geometry concepts noted within your structure
  • Be prepared to present all of your work to the class.

Conclusion

This task creates an awareness of how geometry is important in the structures present in our world.  Polygons and other geometric shapes are embedded in three-dimensional objects such as buildings, monuments, and bridges.
