Title to use on the website: FROM FARM TO TABLE: Why Are Filipino Farmers Still Poor Today?

Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Imagine your favorite meal - a cup of rice, with chicken adobo. The rice came from a farmer in Iloilo who woke up at 4 AM to work in the mud, but he only earns P300 a day.

Here is the mystery: The Philippines is an agricultural country, but why are our farmers the poorest in our society? Why are many of them old, and why do young people not want to be farmers anymore?

You are now an Agri-Preneur Research Team hired by the Department of Agriculture. Your job is to investigate the REAL problems of our farmers today and propose a modern solution that can help them.

Task

TASK

Your group (4 members) will produce TWO outputs:

Product 1: A Problem Analysis Poster (Infographic in Canva)

Show the Top 3 Biggest Problems of Filipino Farmers TODAY with data/proof. (e.g., low farmgate price, climate change, high cost of fertilizer, middlemen system, aging farmers).

Product 2: A TLE Agri-Business Proposal (2-minute Pitch Video or 5-slide PowerPoint)

Propose ONE modern, realistic TLE-based solution to help farmers. Example: Direct Farm-to-Consumer Online Selling, Organic Fertilizer Making, Value-adding (from palay to rice coffee), or Use of Hydroponics.

Process

PROCESS
Step 1: Assign Roles
- Member 1: The Farmer's Voice - Researches the life and income of farmers.
- Member 2: The Market Analyst - Researches prices: farmgate vs. market price and the role of middlemen.
- Member 3: The Climate & Cost Analyst - Researches climate change and cost of farm inputs (fertilizer, seeds).
- Member 4: The Agri-Preneur - Focuses on modern solutions and will be the main designer of the poster.

Step 2: Investigate - Answer these questions using the RESOURCES page only:
1. How much does a farmer earn from 1 kilo of palay vs. how much we pay in the market?
2. What is the average age of Filipino farmers today and what does it mean?
3. What are the effects of typhoon and El Niño on their harvest?
4. What modern technologies can JHS students do to help?

Step 3: Create
- Make your infographic in Canva for Education. Use real numbers and pictures.
- Make your Business Proposal. Use TLE concepts: costing, marketing, profit.

Step 4: Present
- Present your pitch as if you are convincing the DA Secretary to fund your idea.

Evaluation

EVALUATION - Rubric

| Criteria | Excellent (5) | Good (4) | Needs Improvement (3) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content - Problem Analysis | 3 problems are explained clearly with real data from PH | 2 problems explained, but no data | Only 1 problem, no proof |
| TLE Application - Business Proposal | Solution is modern, realistic for JHS, with simple costing/profit computation | Solution is realistic but no costing | Solution is unrealistic or not related to TLE |
| Infographic / Creativity | Very clear, organized, uses Canva well, visually appealing | Clear but too much text | Messy and hard to understand |
| Teamwork & Advocacy | All members participate in pitch, shows empathy for farmers | Only 2-3 members present | Reads from slides, no teamwork |

Total: 20 points

Conclusion

CONCLUSION

Excellent work, Agri-Preneurs! You have discovered that the problem of our farmers is not laziness - it is a system problem involving market, climate, and technology.

You as TLE students have the skills to be part of the solution. Agriculture is not just farming - it is business, technology, and innovation.
