You might have already used an AI tool to help explain a tricky lesson, practice a tough subject, or work through an idea when you felt stuck. These technologies open up some really exciting possibilities. But they also raise honest questions: Does AI truly help us grow as learners or does it sometimes get in the way? Can we trust everything it tells us? And what does "using it responsibly" actually mean for someone like you?
This WebQuest is designed to walk you through a fair, balanced exploration. You’ll gather information from credible sources, look honestly at both the advantages and the real concerns, and form your own thoughtful perspective. The goal isn’t to tell you what to think it’s to help you develop the understanding and judgment you’ll need to use AI wisely, now and in the future.
Task
Research and put together a Balanced Overview Report that fairly presents both what AI does well and what we must be careful about. Your work should answer these five questions clearly:

What are three meaningful ways AI can support learning for you, for your classmates, and for your teachers?

What are three genuine concerns, limitations, or risks we need to understand and take seriously?

Based on what you discover, what three practical guidelines should every student follow when using AI? Simple, realistic rules that actually make sense.

After weighing everything you’ve found what’s your honest conclusion? Should we welcome AI, be cautious with it, or find a balanced path? Explain why you feel that way.
Your final report should be clear, organized, and grounded in what you actually discover not just opinions.
Process
Follow these steps in order. Take notes as you go, talk through what you find with your team, and make sure you’ve looked at more than one source before drawing conclusions.
Step 1 — Build a Basic Understanding
Begin by exploring what AI actually is and what it does in schools. Look for explanations written in plain language, not confusing jargon. Find examples of tools people use, understand what they’re designed to do and also get a clear sense of what they can’t do reliably.
Step 2 — Explore the Advantages
Now look at how AI helps. You’ll find things like personalized help when you’re stuck, ways to practice at your own pace, support for students who learn differently, and tools that help teachers spend more time actually teaching. Focus on real examples and what researchers or educators have observed not just hype.
Step 3 — Examine the Disadvantages
This part matters just as much. Look honestly at the risks. What happens when AI gets things wrong? What if we rely on it so much we stop building our own skills? When does using it cross the line into not doing your own work? Are there fair questions about privacy, cost, or whether everyone has equal access? Approach these fairly concerns aren’t criticisms of the technology. They’re realities we need to understand.
Step 4 — Compare, Reflect, and Balance
Sit together as a group and ask: Are the benefits worth the risks? Can we enjoy the good parts while avoiding the pitfalls? What does "responsible use" actually look like in our classrooms? From that conversation, work together to come up with your three guidelines. They should be simple, practical, and based on what you’ve researched.
Step 5 — Compile
Organize your findings into a clear report. Include a brief introduction, separate sections for benefits and concerns, your three guidelines, and a closing statement that sums up what you’ve learned and where you stand. Be fair acknowledge both sides before stating your conclusion.
