Through this WebQuest, you will explore reliable online resources, analyze information, and work with your classmates to explain the science behind ocean tides. By the end of the activity, you should be able to explain the causes of tides and distinguish between high tide, low tide, spring tide, and neap tide.

 

Task

You and your group will act as a team of young ocean scientists.
Your group will investigate the following questions:
What causes ocean tides?
How does the Moon affect tides?
How does the Sun affect tides?
What is the difference between high tide and low tide?
What are spring tides and neap tides?
Why is understanding tides important in everyday life?

Process

Step 1 – Form Your Team
Work in groups of 3–4 students. Assign roles such as:

Presenter – prepares and presents the group's findings
Step 2 – Explore the Resources
Visit the websites provided in the Resources section. Read about tides, gravity, and the relationship between the Moon, Sun, and Earth.
As you research, take notes and answer:
What are tides?
What causes them?
Why does the Moon have a major influence on tides?
What role does the Sun play?
Step 3 – Investigate High and Low Tides
Study how Earth's oceans respond to the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun.
Create a simple drawing showing where high tides and low tides occur.
Step 4 – Investigate Spring and Neap Tides
Find out what happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned and what happens when the Sun and Moon are positioned at approximately right angles.
Explain the difference between:
Spring tide
Neap tide

Evaluation

The students’ outputs will be evaluated based on scientific accuracy, understanding of ocean tides, use of resources, quality of the final product, and teamwork and presentation. Students will receive a score from 1 to 4 for each criterion. A score of 4 (Excellent) means the information is accurate and clearly explained, the concepts are well understood, the resources are properly used, the final product is organized and informative, and the group demonstrates excellent cooperation and presentation skills. A score of 3 (Good) means the work is generally correct and well presented with only minor areas for improvement. A score of 2 (Satisfactory) means the work demonstrates some understanding but contains gaps or errors and needs improvement. A score of 1 (Needs Improvement) means the work shows limited understanding, contains several inaccuracies, makes little use of the resources, or demonstrates limited participation. The activity will have a total of 20 points, with 18–20 points rated Excellent, 15–17 Very Good, 12–14 Satisfactory, and 11 points and below Needs Improvement.
