Where in the World Are We?

Welcome, Junior Geographers! Have you ever looked at a map or globe and wondered: You may know where your home, school, or hometown is, but did you know that your hometown is part of Florida, Florida is part of the United States, and the United States is part of North America? In this Geography Adventure, you will become a Junior Geographer and use maps, globes, and digital tools to explore our world! Your mission is to travel from your hometown all the way around the world. Along the way, you will learn to locate important places, including Florida's capital, Tallahassee, and the national capital, Washington, D.C. You will also explore the seven continents, five oceans, Equator, Prime Meridian, North Pole, and South Pole. Our Big Question How can maps and globes help us understand where we live and where different places are located in the world? Our Learning Goals By the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to:  Locate your hometown on a map.  Locate Florida and identify it as your state.  Identify North America as your continent. Locate Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. 󾓦 Locate Washington, D.C., the national capital of the United States. Your Mission: Become a Junior Geographer! You and your team have been chosen to become Junior Geography Explorers! Your job is to explore maps and globes and create a digital project called: My Place in the World: A Geography Explorer's Guide You will work with your group to research important places and geography features. Your group will use a digital presentation tool to create a visual guide that teaches others what you learned. Your Final Project Must Include: Part 1: Where We Live Your group must locate and identify:  Our hometown  Florida  North America  Part 2: Important Capitals Your group must locate and identify: Tallahassee — Florida's state capital󾓦 Washington, D.C. — The national capital of the United States  Part 3: Explore Our World Your group must identify and label: Continents 1. North America 2. South America 3. Europe 4. Africa 5. Asia 6. Australia 7. Antarctica Oceans  Pacific Ocean  Atlantic Ocean  Indian Ocean  Arctic Ocean  Southern Ocean Special Geography Features  Equator  Prime Meridian  North Pole  South Pole  Your Technology Mission Your group will create your final project using a teacher-approved digital tool, such as: Google Slides Canva PowerPoint Another teacher-approved presentation tool Your project should include:  A map or globe  Labels Pictures or symbols  At least one fact about what you learned  A clear explanation of how the places are connected

Follow These Steps to Complete Your Geography Adventure! 

⭐ Step 1: Meet With Your Team Your teacher will place you into a small group. Together, your group will choose or receive different Geography Explorer roles. Every student has an important job!  Geography Explorer Roles The Map Explorer Your job is to find: Our hometown Florida North America  The Capital Detective Your job is to find: Tallahassee Washington, D.C.  The World Explorer Your job is to find and identify: Seven continents Five oceans North Pole South Pole  The Geography Guide Your job is to find: Equator Prime MeridianYou will also help your group organize the final project. 

⭐ Step 2: Explore Where We Live Use a map or globe to answer these questions: 1. What is the name of our hometown? 2. Where is our hometown? 3. What state do we live in? 4. What continent do we live on? Think about our location like this:  Home →  Hometown →  Florida → 󾓦 United States →  North America →  Earth Add this information to your group's digital project. 

⭐ Step 3: Find the Capitals Use your map, globe, or teacher-approved online resources to find: Tallahassee Tallahassee is the capital of Florida. 󾓦 Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C., is the national capital of the United States. Add both capitals to your project. 

⭐ Step 4: Explore the Continents Find and label the seven continents:  North America  South America  Europe  Africa  Asia  Australia  Antarctica Add each continent to your digital project.

⭐ Step 5: Explore the Oceans Find and label the five oceans:  Pacific Ocean  Atlantic Ocean  Indian Ocean  Arctic Ocean  Southern Ocean Add the oceans to your digital project. 

⭐ Step 6: Find Special Geography Features Use a map or globe to locate:  The Equator An imaginary line around the middle of Earth. ➖ The Prime Meridian An imaginary line that helps divide Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.  The North Pole The northernmost point on Earth.  The South Pole The southernmost point on Earth. Add these features to your project. 

💬 Step 7: Work With Your Team You will work with your group using a shared digital document or presentation. Your Team Will:  Add your research to your assigned section. 💬 Use the comment feature to ask questions and share ideas.  Read your teammates' work. Leave one helpful comment or suggestion for another team member.  Make sure everyone completes their assigned job. Remember:Good geographers work together, share ideas, and help one another learn!

Students may access the WebQuest and demonstrate their learning using a variety of supports and methods. Supports may include visual maps, simplified or enlarged maps, word banks, read-aloud or text-to-speech tools, audio instructions, AAC devices, partner support, teacher modeling, digital drag-anddrop activities, and extended time. Students may communicate their answers verbally, by pointing, selecting visuals, typing, using AAC, or through another appropriate method of expression.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY: MAP THE WORLD! Are you ready for another Geography Adventure? Choose one country or continent that you would like to learn more about. Use a teacher-approved online resource to discover: Where is it located?  What continent is it part of?  What languages do people speak there?  What is the weather like?  What is one interesting fact about this place? Then create a small: “My Next Geography Adventure!” presentation, poster, or digital postcard to share with your class.
