The Great Animal Classification Mix-Up

Introduction

Essential Question: How do scientists use physical characteristics and life cycles to sort living things into groups?

Emergency at the City Zoo!

A giant thunderstorm rolled through the area last night, blowing down fences and scrambling all the digital signs outside. The animal exhibits. The animals are safe, but they are all mixed up in the wrong habitats, and the signs are completely blank! The zoo opens to the public very soon, and visitors won't know what animals they're looking at or how they survive.

The zoo director has called in a team of junior zoologists to solve this crisis. Your mission is to research a specific class of animals, discover the unique clues that prove which group they belong to, and help the zoo safely organize them before the gates open.

Task

Your team of Zoologists will work in groups of three to investigate one specific animal group (Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, or Fish).

Together, you will gather evidence on your group's traits and use Canva to design a brand-new, digital "Zoo Exhibit Sign."

Your digital exhibit sign must include:

1. The Trait Checklist: Clear descriptions of the physical traits that define your animal class (skin covering, body temperature, etc.).

2. The Life Cycle Map: A visual timeline showing how these animals are born and how they grow.

3. The Habitat Highlight: An explanation of what your animal group needs from their environment to survive.

Once your team picks an animal group, choose one animal from the official zoo research list below to focus your exhibit sign on.

Step 1: Form Your Research Team

Join a group of three and choose the animal class you want to save. Then, assign one specialized zoologist role to each person:

 The Anatomy Specialist: You are in charge of looking at the physical clues. Investigate what covers their skin (fur, feathers, scales), whether they are warm-blooded or cold-blooded, and how they breathe (lungs or gills).

 The Life Cycle Reporter: You are in charge of tracking how they grow. Investigate how these animals are born (do they hatch from eggs or have live births?) and what they look like as they grow up.

 The Habitat Expert: You are in charge of finding their home. Investigate where these animals live, what they eat, and what special adaptations they have to survive in their environment.

Step 3: Design the Exhibit Sign

Log into your team's shared Canva account. Pick an eye-catching poster template. Work together to combine your anatomy clues, life cycle maps, and habitat facts into a beautiful, easy-to-read sign for the zoo visitors.

Canva Design The exhibit sign is highly creative, visually organized, and uses pictures and text. The sign is clean and easy to read with basic use of design elements. The sign is cluttered, incomplete, or are too difficult for a zoo visitor to read.
Teamwork The team collaborated perfectly; all three roles are clearly visible on the final product. All members contributed, but the final product seems like separate pieces put together. One or two students did all the work to create the sign.
