Volcanic eruptions: Fire from the earth

Introduction

" The smoking mountain" In the Philippines we live with 24 active volcanoes. Mayon, Taal, Kanlaon — beautiful but dangerous.
Your Mission: You are now part of the "PHIVOLCS Junior Volcano Monitoring Team".
Your barangay is 15km away from an active volcano. The Mayor needs YOU to create a "Volcano Safety & Preparedness Plan" to keep everyone safe.
Will you be ready when the earth shakes and the mountain roars?

Task

Your group will produce 2 outputs:
"Volcano Alert Brochure": Explains types of eruptions, warning signs, and safety tips
"Evacuation Map + Drill Plan" for your school/barangay: Where to go, what to bring, who to call

Best plans will be presented to class and shared with your parents.

Process

Step 1: BECOME A VOLCANOLOGIST - Research
Answer these using the links:
What are the 2 types of volcanoes in PH: Active vs Inactive?
What are the 3 types of volcanic eruptions: Effusive, Explosive, Phreatic?
What are the 5 warning signs before an eruption?

Step 2: STUDY REAL CASES
Watch and read about:
1991 Mt. Pinatubo Eruption - How did Filipinos survive?
2020 Taal Volcano Eruption - What did people learn?

Evaluation

Criteria 4-Excellent 2 - needs work
Scientific Accuracy  Correct Eruption types, Alert Levels, Hazards Misinformation present
Practicality Evacuation Plan Realistic for Barangay Unrealistic/ Incomplete
Creativity Brochure is Clear, Visual in Filipino /English Text heavy, confusing
Teamwork All members Contributed 1-2 people did everything
Life Saving Focus Includes go-bag, emergency contacts Missing key safety info

Conclusion

"We cannot stop volcanoes, but we can be prepared".

You are now volcano experts. The knowledge you gained today can save lives tomorrow.

Reflection: What is one thing in your home "go-Bag" that you will prepare this weekend.
