Periodic Table Webquest

Introduction

In this project, you'll get a chance to explore the periodic table on your own! Looking at it can be intimidating at first until you realize how often many of these elements are involved in our everyday lives! Not only will you become more familiar with the structure and the organization of the periodic table, but you'll also get a chance to explore some elements that are relevant and interesting to you.

 

Task

  1. Students will learn about the structure and organization of the elements on the periodic table.
  2. Students will learn about the various families that are found on the periodic table.
  3. Students will create a slide about the element of their choice and present it to the class.

 

Process

Use various resources to conduct your own research about the periodic table. Answer the following questions in your notebook:

  1. What is a valence electron?
  2. Why are the elements placed in specific locations on the Periodic Table?
  3. What is a period on the periodic table?
  4. What is a group on the periodic table?
  5. What is a family on the periodic table?

Use various resources to conduct your own research about the different families on the periodic table. In your notebook, write down THREE (3) facts about each family listed below:

  1. Alkali Metals
  2. Alkaline Earth Metals
  3. Transition Metals
  4. Metalloids
  5. Halogens
  6. Noble Gases

Create a Slide about an element of your choice. This slide will be presented to the class. You slide should include the following information:

  1. Element Name
  2. The group and period number of your element
  3. What family does your element belong to?
  4. When was your element first discovered?
  5. Where is your isotope found naturally or how is it produced?

  6. THREE(3) interesting facts

  7. Real World applications and uses of your element

  8. AT LEAST two images that relate to your element with EXPLANATIONS
