Introduction

Imagine a world without electricity. No lights, no internet, no video games, and no way to charge your phone. It’s hard to picture, right? Our modern world runs on energy, but the way we get that energy is changing. For over a century, we've relied heavily on "fossil fuels" like coal, oil, and natural gas. But these resources are running out, and burning them is harming our planet.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to become an energy expert. You will investigate the most promising sources of renewable energy and make a critical recommendation. The fate of a small town's future hangs in the balance! Will you choose solar, wind, or water power to light up their homes and schools? Your research and decision will help shape a cleaner, more sustainable world.

Task

The mayor of a small, forward-thinking town named "Greenville" has hired your team of energy consultants. The town wants to transition away from fossil fuels and build a new renewable energy plant. However, they are unsure which energy source is the best investment for their community.

Your team's task is to research different types of renewable energy, create a compelling Digital Presentation (like a Google Slides or PowerPoint), and present a final recommendation to the "Mayor" (your teacher) and the "Town Council" (your classmates).

Your presentation must:

  1. Explain what renewable energy is and why it's important.
  2. Analyze at least three different renewable energy sources (e.g., Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, Geothermal, or Biomass).
  3. Compare the pros (advantages) and cons (disadvantages) of each source.
  4. Justify your final choice for Greenville by explaining why it is the best fit for their town based on cost, environmental impact, and reliability.

Follow these steps to complete your mission. Each person in your team of four will become an expert on one specific energy source before you all come together to make your final decision.

Step 1: Team Formation and Role Assignment (Day 1)

    • Expert C: The Hydro Hero. Your primary focus is Hydroelectric (Water) Energy.
    • Expert D: The Geothermal Guru. Your primary focus is Geothermal (Earth's heat) Energy.

Step 2: Individual Research (Days 2-3)

  • Use the "Resources" section below to begin your research. You can also find additional sources online.
  • For your specific energy source, answer these questions in a research journal or document:
    1. How does this technology work to create electricity? (Describe the process simply).
    2. What are the biggest advantages? (Think about cost, cleanliness, and renewability).
    3. What are the biggest disadvantages? (Think about cost, location, weather dependence, and environmental impact).
    4. Where in the world is this type of energy most successful?
  • For your secondary sources (the other two): Briefly note their main advantage and disadvantage to get a well-rounded view.

Step 3: Team Collaboration and Decision (Day 4)

  • Come back together as a team.
  • Each "expert" will share their findings with the group for 2-3 minutes.
  • Now, work together to compare the three energy sources. Use this chart to help you decide:
