In this WebQuest, you will be required to prepare a Special Feature article for the newspaper company, New Straits Times Online, for the World Health Week. Your section will cover the "Food" portion of the Special Feature. This task involves writing several articles covering various topics related to the Special Feature. The estimated duration to complete the task is approximately one day.

You are a team of reporters aiming to publish a Special Feature article in the New Strait Times Online website for the World Health Week, specifically for the section about "Food". The below are the guidelines throughout the process in completing your task:

 

1. For research, try to find one video from YouTube that is around five to 10 minutes for each of the below topics. Additionally, please find one article for each of these topics. The articles do not need to be complex, but it has to come from a verifiable and reliable source.

• Sustainable Eating (Eco-friendly diets) 

• Food Technology (Lab-grown meat & innovations) 

• Street Food Culture 

• Food and Mental Health 

• Hidden Ingredients (Sugars & preservatives) 

• Superfoods and Nutrition

2. Prepare a summary for the videos and the articles. The summaries can be aided with visuals if you prefer.

3. Produce the articles. It should make a good first impression, engaging, and and interesting.

4. Discuss with other groups about your discoveries, evaluate each other's articles, and point out what was great and what was not so strong.

Process 1 

First, think about the topic of “Food” and the different categories given: 

• Sustainable Eating (Eco-friendly diets) 

• Food Technology (Lab-grown meat & innovations) 

• Street Food Culture 

• Food and Mental Health 

• Hidden Ingredients (Sugars & preservatives) 

• Superfoods and Nutrition

Discuss with your group what you already know about each topic before starting your research. 

 

Next, for each topic, you need to find: 

ONE (1) YouTube Video 

Go to YouTube https://www.youtube.com/ Search for videos using keywords such as: 

• “Sustainable eating explained” 

• “Future of food technology” 

• “Best street food cultures” 

Choose a video that is around 5 minutes long. Make sure the video is: 

• Easy to understand 

• Informative and relevant to the topic 

 

ONE (1) Article 

Use search engines or reliable websites for sources such as: 

• National Geographic https://www.nationalgeographic.com/ 

• World Health Organization https://www.who.int/ 

Search for articles related to each topic. Choose one article for each topic that: 

• Explains the topic clearly 

• Provides useful facts and information 

• Is not too long or too difficult to understand 

For each topic, make sure you collect: 

• The title of the video and its link 

• The title of the article and its link 

Keep all your findings organised so you can use them later for Process 2 and share them during Process 3. 

 

Process 2 – Food Trend Summaries to the Editorial Board 

Assign each of your group members a letter – Student A, Student B or Student C. Prepare a short summary of each of the food stories/categories you chose in Process 1: 

• Student A: Sustainable Eating & Food Technology 

• Student B: Street Food Culture & Food and Mental Health 

• Student C: Hidden Ingredients & Superfoods 

 

Tips for your summary: 

• Length: Your summary should be between 200 and 250 words. 

• Visuals: You may use graphics from the Internet to illustrate your summary. 

• Keywords: Include at least three key words regarding the articles or videos. 

• Content: Capture the key points and include your own opinions or thoughts. Follow the proposed structure: Introduction → Visuals → Key Points → Conclusion. 

• Preparation: The Editorial Board is going to ask you extra questions about your story – make sure you know more than what you put in the summary. 

 

Useful language for your presentation: 

• "One of the most interesting trends today is..." 

• "You’ll be surprised to know that..." 

• "We think this topic is important for our article because..." 

 

Tips for the Editorial Board: When deciding on the best story for each category, ask yourself: 

• Is the food story trendy and interesting for the readers? 

• Is the summary clear, and is the language used accurate enough? 

• Are there any pictures presented that could be used in the final article? 

 

Process 3 – Producing ‘The Modern Plate’ Article

You now need to pay attention to the tiniest little detail in finishing your articles and putting together the final article: 

• Design & Layout: 

• What will the visual and title clickbait be to attract readers? 

• In what order will you arrange and harmonise the stories within one narrative? 

• What “look” will the articles have? Will they all have the same font and size? 

• How will you present it to other students in class? (e.g., using Canva, AnyFlip, or a physical mock-up). 

• Finalizing: Once you have decided on this, you can work to finalise your articles about Food. 

 

Feedback Session: Read the articles written by the other members of your group and other groups. Give each other feedback based on: 

• Content: 

• Is the summary clear? 

• Do we know exactly what happened, how, and why? 

• Structure: 

• Does the summary have clear paragraphs, and is it well-structured? 

• Language: 

• Are there any grammatical issues? 

• Are the three keywords included correctly? 

 

Final Step: Rewrite and correct your summaries and articles as needed based on the feedback received. Ensure your final article is ready for the class showcase!

We hope that this WebQuest will be successful in helping students explore various current food issues, improve their research, communication, and team work skills. Through topics such as sustainable eating, food technology, street food culture, food and mental health, hidden ingredients, and superfoods, students will have learned important information relevant to modern society.

Through the activities, we hope that we can help students to think critically, analyze reliable sources, and express their own opinions creatively through summaries and magazine production. In addition, the collaborative tasks will have improved cooperation and coordination among group members and increased their confidence in presenting ideas.

In conclusion, this WebQuest should enhance the students’ knowledge on food trends and also promoting essential 21st century learning skills such as creativity, critical thinking, digital literacy and communication skills.
