You are a team of journalists working for the Star, and you are required to produce a section of the newspaper regarding the topic of “Food”. In this section, you need to write several various topics about “Food”. The following below, are the guidelines to help you in completing your task:

  1. From YouTube, try to find one video that is around 5 minutes for each of these topics. Also, please find one article for each of these topics.

    1. The Food Pyramid

    2. Healthy Food and Its Benefits

    3. Unhealthy Food and Its Negative Effects

    4. Traditional Malaysian Cuisine

    5. European Cuisine

  2. Prepare a summary for the videos and the articles, and include visual graphics in the summary.

  3. Discuss with other groups about your findings.

  1. The Food Pyramid

  2. Healthy Food and Its Benefits

  3. Unhealthy Food and Its Negative Effects

  4. Traditional Malaysian Cuisine

  5. European Cuisine

Discuss with your group what you already know about each topic before starting your research.

  • Next, for each topic, you need to find:

1 YouTube video

  1. Go to YouTube https://www.youtube.com/

  2. Search for videos using keywords such as:

  • “Food Pyramid explanation”

  • “Benefits of healthy food”

  • “Effects of junk food”

  • “Malaysian traditional food”

  • “European cuisine overview”

  1. Choose a video that is around 5 minutes long

  2. Make sure the video is:

  • Easy to understand

  • Informative and relevant to the topic

1 Article

  1. Use search engines or reliable websites for sources such as;

  1. Search for articles related to each topic

  2. Choose one article for each topic that:

  • Explains the topic clearly

  • Provides useful facts and information

  • Is not too long or too difficult to understand

  • For each topic, make sure you collect:

  1. The title of the video and its link

  2. The title of the article and its link

  • Keep all your findings organised so you can use them later for Process 2 and share them during Process 3.

Process 2

You are now going to produce a summary regarding the topics of “Food” for each article and YouTube video that you have found in Process 1. Your summary shouldn’t be longer than 250 words. You are encouraged to add your own opinions or thoughts in the summaries. You must also link every summary from each article you have chosen so that it follows a coherent narrative in regards to the topic “Food”.

For each of your summaries, you must provide at least three key words regarding the articles or videos before writing one. You must also capture its key points while including as many interesting details as possible without losing your own voice and opinions. You can also consider incorporating visual aid or any other cues to keep the reader engaged and interested while reading your whole summary.

The summaries may follow the proposed structure as below:

  1. Introduction

  2. Visual Aid

  3. Key Point 1

  4. Visual Aid

  5. Key Point 2

  6. Visual aid

  7. Key Point 3

  8. Visual aid

  9. Conclusion

You can also use your creative liberty in devising your own way of writing an engaging summary, providing that it is still appropriate to be placed in the newspaper section.

Tips for writing your summary:

  1. Verify the main ideas of the videos or articles.

  2. Utilise linking words (for example, besides, moreover, furthermore, thus) to make the summary smooth and organised.

  3. After completing the summary, read it once more to make sure that it is free from grammatical errors.

  4. Make sure to add the link to the original video or article at the end of the summary.

Process 3

You now need to pay attention for the tiniest little detail in finishing the summary:

  • What will the visual and title clickbait be to attract readers?

  • In what order will you arrange and harmonise the story within one narrative?

  • What “look” will the article have? Will they all have the same font and size? How will you present it to other students in class? Once you have decided on this, you can work to finalise your article about Food.

  • Prepare yourself with any 5W 1H questions from other students regarding your summary at the end of your discussion.

Compare and contrast with others’ approach in creating their summaries. Were there any that piqued your interest and appeared brilliant in approach? Give each other feedback on:

          Content:

  • Is the summary clear?

  • Do we know exactly what happened?

  • How and why?

  • What did we learn from it?

    Structure:

  • Does the summary have clear paragraphs, and is it well-structured?

    Language:

  • Are there any grammatical issues?

  • Are the tenses appropriate?

  • Is there a good range of vocabulary?

  • Are the three keywords included correctly?

Rewrite and correct your summaries if needed.
