Food Chains: Discovering How Living Things Depend on Each Other

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how animals and plants survive in nature? Every living thing depends on another living thing for energy and survival. In this WebQuest, students will explore food chains, learn about producers, consumers, and decomposers, and discover how energy moves through ecosystems. By the end of this activity, students will understand the importance of balance in nature and how all organisms are connected.

Task

Students will work individually or in small groups to:

  1. Define a food chain.
  2. Identify producers, consumers, and decomposers.
  3. Create a food chain using plants and animals from a chosen habitat.
  4. Explain what happens if one organism in the food chain disappears.
  5. Design a simple poster or digital presentation showing their food chain.

     

Process

Step 1: Learn About Food Chains

Visit the following websites and videos to gather information about food chains and ecosystems.

  • National Geographic Kids – Food Chains
  • BBC Bitesize – Food Chains and Food Webs
  • YouTube educational videos about food chains

Take notes on:

  • Producers
  • Herbivores
  • Carnivores
  • Omnivores
  • Decomposers

Step 2: Choose a Habitat

Select one habitat:

  • Forest
  • Ocean
  • Desert
  • Grassland
  • Pond

Research animals and plants that live there.

Step 3: Create a Food Chain

Using the information gathered, create a food chain with at least five organisms.

Example:

Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk

Include arrows to show the direction of energy flow.

Step 4: Analyze the Food Chain

Answer the following questions:

  1. Which organism is the producer?
  2. Which organisms are consumers?
  3. What would happen if one organism disappeared?
  4. Why are food chains important?

Step 5: Present Your Work

Create one of the following:

  • Poster
  • PowerPoint
  • Canva design
  • Google Slides presentation

Your presentation should include:

  • A title
