Introduction
Welcome to this exciting WebQuest! An author's purpose refers to their intention or motivation behind writing a piece,
whether it is fiction or non-fiction. This purpose is evident in the choice of genre, writing style, and language used by the author.
These elements are carefully selected to effectively convey a central message, entertain the reader, influence their opinion
and more. The author's purpose is also reflected in the title of their work, prefaces, and their personal background.
Typically, the author's purpose can be categorized into three main groups: persuade, inform, and entertain,
represented by the acronym PIE. The PIE acronym simply represents the primary classes of an author's purpose.
Task
Students will work individually and in groups to complete activities that will help them to understand the reason why authors write.
They will sing along to a short jingle, watch a short video, read short texts, venture on a gallery walk where they will use context cluse to
identify the authors purpose for each text. At the end of the WebQuest, each group will create an advertisement/poem/song base on their
chosen purpose to show their understanding of the authors purpose.
Process
The lesson will begins with the teacher introducing the students to a short jingle entitled “P.I. E” Students will be
listen keenly to the words from the jingle to identify clues of what they think the lesson will be about. After which they will watch a short
video about authors purpose, where they will be identifying the reason why authors write. They will then venture on a gallery
walk in groups of three, where they will observe short texts and identify the authors purpose. Finally they will create a jingle/poem/song
based on their given purpose.
P. I.E” Jingle
“When we write a text,
We have a goal in mind,
Let’s look for clues inside the words,
To see what we can find!
P is to Persuade, try to change your view,
“Buy this!” “Try this!” that’s the clue for you.
I is to Inform, giving facts so clear,
Teaching something new for us to learn and hear.
E is to Entertain, stories full of fun,
Jokes and adventures just for everyone!
So when you read a book today,
Remember what to see:
Ask yourself the question
What is P-I-E? 🎶
Examples of short texts
"A text about Dolphins"
"A comic strip"
