Think Before Throw: A Land Pollution Mission

Introduction

Welcome Grade 5 explorers to this exciting WebQuest! Land pollution happens when waste and harmful materials are dumped on the land, making it dirty and unsafe for humans, animals, and plants. In many communities, poor waste disposal can lead to blocked drains, bad odors, and even flooding.

In this WebQuest, students will explore land pollution by identifying its causes, effects, and solutions. They will examine real-life examples, especially from local communities, and learn how their actions can help protect the environment. This will help them become more responsible citizens and environmental protectors.

Task

Students will work individually and with a partner to complete activities that help them understand land pollution. They will watch a short video, examine pictures, read a short passage, and identify causes, effects, and solutions to land pollution. At the end of the WebQuest, students will create a poster or foldable showing the causes, effects, and solutions of land pollution.

Students will be able to:

 1. Define land pollution in their own words

 2. Identify causes of land pollution

 3. Explain the effects of land pollution on people and the environment

 4. Suggest solutions to reduce land pollution

 5. Create a poster or foldable showing their understanding

Process

Step 1: Explore the Topic

Students will watch a short video about land pollution to learn what it is, what causes it, and how it affects the environment. Pay attention to examples of pollution and how it impacts people and animals.

Step 2: Research Information

Each group of students will be assigned to a topic and will use teacher-provided online resources to find information about:

    •    What land pollution is (group 1)

    •    Causes of land pollution (e.g., littering, dumping, burning garbage) (group 2)

    •    Effects on humans, animals, and the environment (group 3)

    •    Ways to reduce land pollution (group 4)

Step 3: Read and Analyze

Students work in groups of three (4) collaboratively and will read the paragraph about a local community and identify:

    •    At least 3 causes of land pollution

    •    At least 3 effects of land pollution

    •    2–3 possible solutions to improve the situation

Students may underline or highlight key information in the passage after which the teacher will lead a class discussion.

Step 4: Organize Findings

Students will complete an in-class worksheet or table after a class discussion showing:

    •    Causes of land pollution

    •    Effects of land pollution

    •    Possible solutions

Step 5: Create a Final Product

Students will work individually to create a colorful poster or foldable about land pollution. Your work must:

    •    Include a clear definition of land pollution

    •    Show at least 3 causes

    •    Show at least 3 effects

    •    Include solutions to the problem

    •    Be neat and creative
