The People Around You: Exploring the Bioecological Systems Theory

Introduction

Have you ever stopped to wonder why you are the way you are?

Is it just your DNA, or is it the neighborhood you grew up in? Maybe it's the laws of your country or even the decade you were born?

Urie Bronfenbrenner argued that we are like nested Russian dolls. We don't grow up in a vacuum; we develop within a complex system of relationships and environments from our immediate family to the global economy. In this WebQuest, you are going to become a Social Architect of yourself. Your mission is to map out these invisible strings and see how they shape a human life.

For this WebQuest, you will need a writing paper as your answer sheet, a bond paper for drawing, a pen, and a compass protractor or something that helps you draw circles.

Task

🎯 Task

By the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to:

  • 🟢 Define the five systems of Bronfenbrenner’s theory and their specific boundaries.

  • 🔵 Explain the interactions between a person's immediate environment and broader social structures.

  • 🟡 Classify real-life influences (e.g., family, media, government) into their correct ecological layers.

  • 🟠 Analyze the impact of time on a person's developmental trajectory.

  • 🔴 Evaluate a personal case study to determine which system played the most pivotal role in a subject's life outcomes.

Process

STEP 1: THE CENTER OF IT ALL

👤Subject: Pick yourself as the center of this activity. At the center of your sheet, draw a small circle and write your nickname.

STEP 2: KNOW THE LAYERS

✏️ Answer the questions below on your answer sheet "Ecological Systems Report":

  1. What do you call the system that you directly interact most of the time?
  2. Think of the time when your parents talked to your friends, what do you call that interaction?
  3. If your parents do not like your friends, how will you feel?

STEP 3: LIST IT DOWN!

📝Recall the Systems: For yourself, fill the blanks with the right label of ecological system on your answer sheet, and give specific examples for each layer in your life:

___________: Direct settings.

  • Provide the nicknames of the people you interact with as many as you can.

___________: Connections between microsystems.

  • In as many as you can remember, list down the times or situations when the people you mentioned above interacted.

___________: Indirect environments.

  • Ask your parents where they work and list it down here.

___________: Cultural values, economic status, and national laws.

  • List down at least five cultural values or traditions you follow.

___________: Transitions and historical time.

  • Pick any of the following that you experienced and list it down on your sheet: war, pandemic, crises, natural disaster, rise of new technology, and moving to new place.

STEP 4: MAP IT OUT!

🗺️Map the Systems: On your drawing sheet, draw five layers of circles around the small circle that you labeled with your nickname earlier. Label each layer with the correct name of the ecological system. Of the things you listed above, put them on the layers of circles where they rightfully belong.

Viola! Good job!

Now that you are done, go back to your answer sheet where you proceed to the final step of the task!

STEP 5: THINK OF IT!

🤔How do you see yourself now? On your answer sheet, conclude your presentation with a System Impact Summary, arguing which layer had the strongest influence on the subject in a short paragraph with 5 sentences.

Criteria

🧩 1 - Beginning

🌱 3 - Developing

🌟 5 - Mastery

System Definition

I still can't define all the systems.

I can define the systems but gets confused sometimes.

I can clearly define each system without confusion.

Classification

I still place influences in the wrong layers.

Most influences are correctly categorized by me.

I can perfectly categorize and justify all examples.

Synthesis

I have little confidence that I connected the system and me correctly.

I can show basic connection between me and my environment.

I can deeply analyze how the layers interact to shape the person.

Organization

I feel like my presentation is cluttered or hard to follow.

My presentation has a logical flow with some minor errors.

I have confidence that my presentation follows logically and correctly.

🌟 MY SOCIAL ARCHITECT MESSAGE

I am learning to think like a social architect 🏠

I am improving my observation and social skills 🔍

I am becoming a confident and self-understanding individual ✨

Conclusion

🌟 Congratulations, Social Architect! 🌟

You’ve successfully deconstructed the complex web of human development. Now that you understand we are surrounded by systems that we may or may not be aware are actually influencing us, I hope you get to understand others more, but more importantly, yourself. From the family you laugh with, to the friends you make, and to the entire history you create, all of those are naturally making you as a person. By looking at a life through Bronfenbrenner’s lens, you can see that "no man is an island."

As you move forward, think about your own systems. Who are the people in your microsystem today? What macrosystem values are influencing your future career?

Understanding these layers is the first step in taking the lead in your own development.

So, all the best there, social architect!🎉
