Introduction
Why do some students learn best through rewards, while others need to think deeply or learn by watching others?
Imagine you are a new teacher stepping into your first classroom. Every student learns differently some respond to praise, some need structure, and others learn by observing their peers. To be successful, you must understand how learning actually works.
In this WebQuest, you will explore three major learning theories:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Behaviorism
- Social Cognitive Theory
By the end, you’ll be able to decide how to teach students more effectively based on how they learn.
Task
For this assignment, you’re basically learning how people learn. You’ll look at three different theories: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory, and figure out what makes each one different and how teachers use them in the classroom.
You get to choose how you show your understanding. You can make a comparison chart, a poster, or a Google Slides presentation.
Whatever you choose, make sure you explain:
- what each theory means
- the main psychologist behind it
- how each one says learning happens
- and give a real example of what it would look like in a classroom
At the end, you’ll present your project to the class and explain what you found.
Process
Step 1:
Watch the following Youtube videos to understand each theory:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Behaviorism
- Social Cognitive Theory

Step 2:
For EACH theory, answer:
- What is it?
- How do students learn?
- Who created it?
- Example in a classroom
Step 3:
Create a chart that compares:
- Focus of learning
- Role of teacher
- Role of student
- Strengths and weaknesses
Step 4:
Create a classroom scenario (example: student struggling, group work, behavior issue).
Explain how EACH theory would approach that situation.
Step 5: Create Your Product
Build your presentation with:
- Clear slides
- Visuals (images, charts)
- Simple explanations
- Real-life examples
Step 6:
Teach the class about the three theories.
Evaluation
| Category | 4 (Excellent) | 3 (Good) | 2 (Basic) | 1 (Needs Work) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Content | All theories clearly explained with examples | Mostly clear | Some missing info | Very unclear |
| Comparison | Strong, detailed comparisons | Some comparisons | Limited comparison | No comparison |
| Application | Realistic, strong examples | Good examples | Basic examples | No examples |
| Design | Very neat, creative, easy to follow | Mostly clear | Some clutter | Hard to read |
| Presentation | Confident, clear, engaging | Mostly clear | Some difficulty | Unprepared |
Conclusion
Now that you’ve explored how students learn, think about this:
- Which theory do you think is most effective?
- Do students learn the same way all the time?
- How can teachers use all three theories together?
Understanding learning theories helps you become a better teacher by meeting the needs of all students.
Reflection Questions
- Can one learning theory work for every student? Why or why not?
- How might culture or background affect how students learn?
- When should a teacher switch strategies?
