Introduction
Subject: Language Arts
Topic: Nouns
Subtopic: Common and Proper Nouns
Focus Question: How do I effectively share ideas about cultural practices which have helped to shape our national and regional identity?

Welcome, young explorers!
Today, you are going on a language adventure to discover the power of nouns.
Do you remember what NOUNS are?
Nouns are naming words that refer to people, places, animals, things, and even ideas (Cambridge Dictionary).
For Example:
People - John, boy.
Animal - Donkey
Idea - Love
Nouns are everywhere around us, from people and places to things and ideas.
Today, you will explore different types of nouns and learn how they are used in everyday communication. This activity is designed to challenge your thinking and help you become a stronger writer and communicator.
Task
For this task, you are required to explore and understand common and proper nouns. By the end of this activity, you will identify nouns, create your own sentences, and write a short paragraph about Jamaica using both common and proper nouns correctly.
Process
Complete by following the steps in order -
Step 1:
Begin by watching the video about nouns and reading the PowerPoint document as a group, provided in the resources below. As you watch, listen carefully to the explanation of what nouns are, pay attention to the examples given, and try to think of your own examples while watching.
Step 2:
After watching the video, read the information provided on common nouns and proper nouns. Take your time to understand the difference between them. Remember, common nouns name general things, while proper nouns name specific people, places, or things and begin with capital letters.
Step 3:
Next, look at the examples provided. Identify and highlight or write down the nouns you see. Try to determine whether each noun is a common noun or a proper noun.
Step 4:
Now it is your turn to practise. Create your paragraph of at least 4 sentences, including at least five different nouns. Make sure to include both common nouns and proper nouns in your sentences. Check that your proper nouns begin with capital letters and that your sentences end with the appropriate punctuation mark.
Step 5:
Work with a partner or think independently to review your sentences. Ask yourself:
- Did I use the nouns correctly?
- Did I capitalise the proper nouns?
- Did I add the correct punctuation marks?
Step 6:
Finally, complete the worksheet provided. This will help you practise identifying and using common and proper nouns correctly.

Great job, young learners! 🎉
Today you explored what nouns are and how they are used in everyday language. You learned that nouns name people, places, animals, and things, and that proper nouns are special because they always begin with capital letters and names are specific, while common nouns are general. You also created your own paragraph about Jamaican culture.
By identifying nouns, creating your own sentences, and completing your activities, you have taken an important step in becoming a stronger writer and communicator.
Remember, nouns are everywhere! As you read books, watch videos, or talk with others, try to spot nouns around you.
Keep practising, keep exploring, and most importantly, keep learning! ✨
