Learning How We Learn

Introduction

Imagine you and your best friend are taking turns solving math equations to study for an upcoming test. You notice that your friend is using a different method to solve the equation. Despite the difference in method, you both end up with the same answer. But which method works best, and why did you both do them differently? Welcome to this WebQuest, where you will learn how we learn.

In this WebQuest, you will explore three main learning theories:

  • Cognitive psychology
  • Behaviorism
  • Social Cognitive Theory

Once you have concluded this WebQuest, you will have more knowledge regarding these theories and your own learning style.

Task

You will work with a partner to:

  • Research the three learning theories mentioned in the introduction.
  • Compare and contrast how each theory defines learning.
  • Create a presentation. (This can be a poster, PowerPoint, or Canva presentation.)
  • Create a scenario within a classroom that each theory can be applied to.

Your presentation MUST include:

  • Definition and founder of each theory.
  • Realistic classroom examples.
  • Comparisons between each theory, how are they similar and/or different?
Process

First, you and your partner must become familiar with the three learning theories. Visit the links below to conduct some research:

Next, you may want to take notes from each website. These notes should include:

  • Definitions.
  • Key theorists.
  • How learning happens depending on each theory.
  • An example of how the theory can be incorporated into a classroom.

Then, you will compare and contrast theories.

  • How are these theories similar? How are they different?
  • Which theory seems the most effective, and why?
  • How might the previous question depend on the individual's learning style?

Finally, once you have gathered all of your information you need you will create your presentation.

Evaluation

Criteria

4 (Excellent) 3 (Good) 2 (Basic) 1 (Needs Improvement)

Content Accuracy

All theories clearly explained with detail. Mostly accurate. Some inaccuracies. Major inaccuracies.
Comparison Strong, thoughtful comparisons. Adequate comparisons. Limited comparisons. No comparisons.
Creativity Highly engaging visuals. Some creativity.  Minimal visuals.  No effort in design.
Collaboration All members contributed.  Most contributed.  Uneven participation. One person did not work.
Presentation Clear, confident, engaging.  Mostly clear. Some difficulty. Hard to understand.

Conclusion

Finally, you've discovered different ways that people learn. I want you to think about this:

  • Which theory resonated with you the most?
  • How could a teacher use all of these theories in the classroom at once?
  • Which theory do you think is most effective in modern-day classrooms? Why?
  • Can these theories work together, or can they conflict?
  • How could learning change if one theory was used exclusively?

For an optional extension to this assignment:

  • Design a lesson plan using one theory out of three.
