How Do We Learn? Exploring Learning Theories

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how people actually learn? Why do some people learn by doing, while others learn by watching? Think about the last time you learned something new... did you learn by practicing, thinking, or watching someone else?

In this WebQuest, you will explore three major learning theories: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

By the end of this activity, you will understand how these theories shape the way teachers teach—and how YOU learn.

Task

In this activity, you will:

  • Research three major learning theories
  • Compare how each theory explains learning
  • Create a visual project (poster, slideshow, or infographic)

This is an individual project. Your final product should clearly show your understanding of each theory and how they are different. Your final project should clearly compare all three theories, not just define them.

Process

Step 1: Research the Theories

Use the following websites to learn about each theory:

Cognitive Psychology: https://www.simplypsychology.org/cognitive.html

Behaviorism: https://www.simplypsychology.org/behaviorism.html

Social Cognitive Theory: https://www.simplypsychology.org/social-cognitive-theory.html

Step 2: Take Notes

Create a chart with the following categories:

  • Theory
  • Key Idea
  • How Learning Happens
  • Example

Step 3: Compare the Theories

Answer the following questions:

  • How are the theories similar?
  • How are they different?
  • Which theory do you think best explains how people learn? Why?

Step 4: Create Your Project

Choose one format:

  • Poster
  • Slideshow
  • Infographic

Your project must include:

  • A definition of each theory
  • A real-life example for each
  • Visual elements (pictures, colors, etc.)
  • A comparison of all three theories
Evaluation

Your project will be graded using the provided rubric.

You will be evaluated based on:

  • Meeting all assignment requirements
  • Demonstrating understanding of Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory
  • Using the provided links in your research
Conclusion

Now that you have explored how people learn, take a moment to reflect on your own experiences.

  • Which learning theory best describes how you learn?
  • How can teachers use these theories in the classroom?
  • Can people learn using more than one theory at the same time? Explain.
  • Which theory do you think is most effective in real classrooms, and why?
