Rock Quest - Exploring the Earth

Introduction

You are a geologist who has just moved to a new town for a job opportunity.

In preparation for geological surveys you'll need to perform, you research the grounds makeup within this new region.

You will get the answers to the questions of:

  • What are the different kinds of rocks?
  • What does a rocks type tell you about it's creation?

Task

You are a geologist.

Your task is to understand how rocks come to exist and list them in a clear and concise way.

You will need to learn what the different kinds of rocks are and then write a brief description of them.

You will then be provided with a list of rocks and the types of environments they are found in, you will then need to put them on a chart next to the correct typing.

Process

Step 1: Learn what the 3 different kinds of rocks are.

You can find out the different kinds of rocks here: https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/earth/if-rocks-could-talk2/three-types-of-rock

Step 2: Write a brief description of how each kind of rock comes to form.

Step 3: Sort the given rocks into the correct category

Granite which has been slowly pushed to the surface after years of erosion after having cooled from magma.

Obsidian found near an inactive volcano.

Sandstone found in a mesa where is has been compacted upon and cemented together.

Jadeite formed over a long period of time with high pressure and heat that is excavated or emerged at the surface.

Conclusion

In this assignment, you will have learned about the 3 primary classifications of rocks and few examples of them.

There are many different kinds of rocks that cross categories or break the mold all together that we didn't cover today.

It's truly a wonder to learn that something as common as a granite counter top was formed under the ground by extreme heat before eventually being cut at a quarry and eventually turned into your homes kitchen counter.
