The Plastic-Free Pilipinas Challenge

Introduction

Did you know that the Philippines is one of the world's leading contributors to ocean plastic pollution? While our islands are beautiful, our 'sachet culture' is putting our marine life and health at risk. You have been appointed as a Junior Environmental Consultant for your local Barangay. Your mission: Create a 'Zero-Waste Action Plan' to convince your community leaders to reduce plastic use. Are you ready to save our seas?

Task

Your goal is to produce a Barangay Waste Reduction Infographic and a Short Proposal Letter.

  • The Infographic: Must show 3 facts about plastic in the Philippines and 3 practical alternatives to plastic.

  • The Letter: A 3-paragraph pitch to your Barangay Captain explaining why and how the community should start a 'Plastic-Free Friday.'

Process

Step 1: Form a team of 3 (Researcher, Designer, and Writer).

Step 2: Visit the links in the 'Resources' section to gather data on the current state of plastic pollution in the Philippines.

Step 3: Use Canva or a similar tool to create your infographic.

Step 4: Draft your proposal letter using the data you found.

Step 5: Submit the link to your digital infographic and your letter to the class forum.

1. Rationale (Bakit ito ituturo?)

This WebQuest is designed to bridge the gap between classroom environmental concepts and real-world civic action. In the Philippines, plastic pollution is a critical issue. By engaging in this inquiry-based activity, students don't just learn facts; they develop advocacy skills, digital literacy, and a sense of community responsibility.

2. Target Learners

  • Grade Level: Grade 9 or 10 (Junior High School)

  • Subject: Science (Ecosystems / Environmental Science) or Araling Panlipunan (Contemporary Issues)

  • Duration: 2 to 3 class sessions (approx. 120-180 minutes)

3. Learning Standards / Competencies (Curriculum Alignment)

  • Science: Describe how consumers help maintain the balance of an ecosystem.

  • Araling Panlipunan: Nakabubuo ng konklusyon sa kahalagahan ng kahandaan at disiplina sa pagharap sa mga suliraning pangkapaligiran.

  • ICT: Use online collaboration tools to effectively share information.

4. Teaching Tips / Implementation

  • Pre-Activity: Conduct a short "waste audit" in the classroom. Ask students to count how many single-use plastics they have in their bags.

  • Grouping: It is best to group students with diverse skills (one good in research, one in art/design, and one in writing).

  • Scaffolding: If students are not familiar with Canva, provide a 5-minute demo or a basic template they can follow.

  • Extension: You can invite a local Barangay official to virtually "judge" the best proposal letters to make the activity feel even more authentic.
