Our Stories, Our Voices: Sharing Family and Community Narratives

Introduction

Students will explore the power of storytelling in expressing identity, culture, and experiences. They will interview family members or community members, listen to traditional stories, and create a digital narrative that combines their own voice with the stories shared. This WebQuest honors students’ home languages and cultural backgrounds while building English listening and speaking skills.

Task

Students will:

  1. Select a story from their family or community (oral history, cultural tradition, or personal experience).
  2. Record themselves retelling the story in English, using their home language for reference if needed.
  3. Create a digital presentation (Flipgrid, Google Slides, or video) combining audio, text, and images.
  4. Reflect on what they learned about their family or community culture and how language shapes storytelling.
Process

1. Planning:

  • Brainstorm story ideas (family memory, cultural tradition, or local legend).
  • Discuss with a parent or guardian which story to choose.

2. Research & Gathering:

  • Collect details: characters, setting, sequence of events.
  • Ask parents/community members for context, explanations, or phrases in the home language.

3. Drafting Story:

  • Write a short outline or script in English (support with home language if needed).
  • Identify key vocabulary or phrases to practice.

4. Recording/Creating:

  • Use Flipgrid, Google Slides, or a short video to present the story orally.
  • Add pictures, props, or drawings to enhance meaning and engagement.

5. Reflection:

  • Write a paragraph or record a short reflection on what they learned about their family, culture, or community.

Share how the story connects to their own identity and language learning journey.
