Introduction
Our Presidents
In this webquest, students will learn about the president of the United States and the role that the president plays in our country.
Students will explore who the current president is, what the president does, our former presidents, and why the president is important.
This lesson is aligned with Florida's state standard of social studies (SS.1.A) and encourages students to remember, understand, and explain information, which reflects Bloom's taxonomy at the appropriate first-grade level.
Learning Objective:
- Students will be able to identify the President of the United States and describe one responsibility of the President.
Guiding Questions:
- Who is the president of the United States?
- What does the president do?
- Why is the president important?
Task
Students will work in small groups of 4 to create a group narrated powerpoint presentation about the President of the United States. Each group will include pictures, small words, and voice narration explaining who the President is and what the President does.
Process
- The teacher will divide the students into groups of four
- Each student will have a role
- Reader: reads information from the website with help from the teacher
- Picture Finder: Chooses pictures for the presentation
- Speaker: Records the narration for the slides
- Helper: Assist the group with research
3. Students will visit the following websites with the teachers guidence
4. Groups will create 3-4 slides:
- Slide 1: Who is the President?
- Slide 2: What does the President do?
- Slide 3: Why is the President important?
5. Students will practice and record their narration
6. Groups will share their presentation with the class
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated using a simple rubric based on:
- Participation in the group
- correct information about the President
- Clear pictures and simple words
- Ability to explain one to two jobs of the President
Each Category will be scored as:
- Excellent
- Good
- Fair
- Needs Help
Conclusion
By completing this webquest, students learned who the President is and why the President is an important leader in our country. Working together helped students practice teamwork, speaking, and listening skills.
