Introduction
Introduction:
Welcome students! In this web quest we will explore the building blocks of a story. Each story has different important special parts called story elements. Understanding these elements will help us become stronger readers! In this lesson we will learn to identify the characters, setting, problem, and solution of a story and understand how they work together.
Guiding Question:
How does identifying story elements- characters, setting, problem, and solution- help us better understand the stories we read?
Task
Your task is to read a story of your choice and then create a Story Elements Project. You can choose one of the following options:
Option A: Coloring Scene
- You will draw and color a scene from the story and label the characters, setting, problem, and solution.
Option B: Written Story Analysis
- You will write a paragraph describing the characters, setting, problem and solution, and name one thing you would have added or changed in the story.
Option C: Story Retell
- You will identify the characters, setting, and problem and solution of a scene and then act it out.
Option B: Sorting Activity
- You will receive cut out images/words from the story and then glue them into 4 labeled boxes to sort the characters, setting, problem, and solution.

Conclusion
Conclusion:
Congratulations! You have successfully explored how characters, setting, and problem and solution work together to make a story. By completing your project you showed you can identify and explain story elements. Keep practicing these skills every time you read!
Enrichment Activity:
If you want to continue practicing your skills, visit Storyline Online and watch a story of your choice. Then, using what we learned today, identify the different story elements in your notebook and then write a short paragraph describing an alternative ending that you would have picked for the story.
