Exploring Shapes

Introduction

Have you ever noticed all the shapes around you? Circles, squares, triangles and rectangles are everywhere! In this WebQuest, you will explore 2D shapes in the real world and learn to identify them in everyday objects.

Guiding Questions:

  • What 2D shapes can you find around you?
  • How can we describe each shape?
  • Why is it important to recognize shapes in the world?

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and describe at least 4 2D shapes (circle, sqaure, triangle, rectangle, hexagon).
  • Recognize 2D shapes in everyday objects.
  • Create a digital presentation showing real-world examples of shapes.

(Standards Alignment:

  • Florida Math Standard MA.2.GR.1.1 - Identify and draw two-dimensional figures based on their defining attributes.
  • Bloom's Taxonomy: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Creating)
Task

You and your group will become Shape Detectives! Your mission is to create an online "Shape Hunt" project using Google Slides or Powerpoint. Each group will:

  • Find 4 real-world examples of 2D shapes (ex., a clock = circle, a door = rectangle).
  • Include an image of each object.
  • Label the shape name and describe where you found it.
  • Share your project online with the class, each group member will explain at least one shape during a live or recorded presentation.
Process

- Form groups of 3-4 students.

- Assign Roles: Researcher, Digital Designer, Writer/Editor, Narrator.

- Find your shape:

- Create your online project:

  • Each student adds their shape's picture, name, location, and a short description to the group project.
  • Include at least one interactive element (ex., quiz question, clickable link, or short video).

- Submit and share to the class.

  • Present your project to the class live or record a short presentation explaining your findings.
Evaluation
Criteria 4 - Excellent 3 - Good 2 - Needs Improvement 1 - Beginning
Shapes Identified All 4 shapes correctly identified 3 shapes correct 2 shapes correct Fewer than 2 shapes correct
Pictures/Visuals Clear, relevant images for all shapes Most shapes have images (3/4 images) Some shapes have images (2/4 images) Few or no images
Project Organization Easy to follow, visually appealing, interactive Mostly organized, interactive Somewhat messy Hard to follow
Teamwork All members contributed equally Most contributed Some contributed Little contribution from all members
Presentation Clear, engaging narration or presentation Mostly clear Some parts unclear Not presented or unclear

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have explored shapes in the world around you and shared your discoveries with your classmates. You now know how to identify, describe, and apply knowledge about 2D shapes.
