Genre Masters: Helping Littles Discover the World of Books

Introduction

The Littles have discovered the Whittier Library and Mrs. Hagins needs to be rescued!

While enthusiastically searching for the perfect book, The Littles have managed to remove dozens of books from the shelves and stack them in piles on the tables. It’s great that they love reading, but now the books are disorganized and mixed up. Mrs. Hagins needs YOU to help figure out which genre each book belongs in so they can be returned to their proper location in the library.

You are also tasked with creating a product to explain at least 3 different book genres to the younger students. This will help them have an idea of what they like, so they no longer terrorize the librarian and her books!

Task

By the end of this WebQuest, you will:

  • understand what a book genre is.
  • identify key features of 3 different genres.
  • correctly classify books by genre.
  • work cooperatively in a group.
  • present information clearly and creatively.

Process

While you are creating your WebQuest, you must keep a journal of your work. This journal  will help you explain your thinking and show what you learned.

*Journal and additional links will also be accessible in their Google Classroom*

Research and choose at least 3 book genres to work with. Use these links to help you decide which genres you want to work with.

  2. https://tinyurl.com/4v9fz4bf
  3. Record your choices

Learn and describe their characteristics. Remember, we are trying to prevent The Littles from overwhelming Mrs. Hagins. You are using vocabulary that a Kindergarten or 1st grade student will understand. You are trying to convince them to read the genres you have chosen.

Provide examples of your chosen genres. Provide at least 3 examples of books that fit your chosen genre. Choose picture books from the green shelves using the OPAC tool in Google Classroom, or you can use any of our posted search engines to find picture books that fit your genre. Remember our lessons on using specific search terms! You will need to attach visuals of these books to your final product: photos, drawings, digital drawings, etc.

Create a visual or digital project to teach others about your genre. This could be a poster, a Publisher document, a Google Slideshow, a pamphlet, or various other types of presentations. If your group has an idea, just let me know! Your presentation should include the name of the genre, a description and examples for each of your genre choices. You also might want to add information telling what you like about this book genre, or talk about a book or books you have read that fit.

Present your findings to the class.

Your final project will help classmates and Littles decide what kinds of books they might enjoy reading next. Your class will be split into groups. Each group will join me for either a kindergarten or first grade library time, and you will teach your genres to The Littles.

Conclusion

Congratulations and THANK YOU! Your team has educated The Littles on the different types of books they might like in the library. Mrs. Hagins is confident that they can now go to the sections they are interested in to find books, instead of roaring through the library scattering unwanted books like a tornado. You have saved the day and are the Heroes of the Wildcat Library!
