Area and Circumference of Circles

Introduction

Hello!

Today you will be tasked with finding the area and circumference of every day objects. Circles are all around us! Can you solve for their measurements?

Objectives

  • Use the proper formulas to solve for the area and circumference of circles
  • Solve for area and circumference of circles with different units of measure
  • Apply knowledge of circles to solve for area of semi-circles
Task

Working in groups of four, create a poster displaying the area and circumference of five different real-world circles (sport balls, dinner plates, tires, swimming pool, etc.). Groups will present their posters to the class tomorrow! In addition to the poster, each individual group member should complete this webquest.

Posters should include:

  • Formula for area and circumference of circles
  • 5 different real-world circles and measurements of area and circumference
  • Step-by-step work shown for area and circumference of each object
  • Visuals/images of objects
  • Names of group members

1. What is the formula for area of a circle?

2. What is the formula for circumference of a circle?

3. What is the circumference and area of a circle with a radius of 5 inches? Show your work.

Conclusion

During this assignment, students practiced solving for area and circumference of circles using real-world objects. Upon completion of this assignment, students will have worked in groups to complete a poster presentation.
