Journey of a Water Droplet – Exploring the Water Cycle

Introduction

Question: How does water travel around the Earth and why is it important for all living things?

Learning Objective:

Students will describe and illustrate the stages of the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection) and explain how water changes form as it moves through each stage.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Alignment:

  • Remembering: Identify the stages of the water cycle.
  • Understanding: Explain what happens during each stage.
  • Applying: Create a presentation that models the water cycle.
  • Analyzing: Compare how water changes in different environments.
  • Creating: Develop a narrated PowerPoint story of a water droplet’s journey.

In this WebQuest, you will become a Water Cycle Explorer! You’ll research how water moves through the Earth’s systems and share your knowledge in a narrated PowerPoint presentation.

Task

Your team will create a group-narrated PowerPoint presentation called “The Journey of a Water Droplet.”

Each group will:

  1. Research the stages of the water cycle.
  2. Design a PowerPoint with labeled images and explanations of each stage.
  3. Record narration telling the story of a single water droplet as it travels through the entire cycle.
  4. Present your project to the class.

Process

Step 1: Form Groups and Assign Roles

Each group will have 4 members. Assign each person one of these roles:

  • Researcher: Finds information about one stage of the water cycle.
  • Writer: Writes the script and story of the water droplet’s journey.
  • Designer: Creates PowerPoint slides and adds visuals.
  • Narrator: Records the narration for the presentation.

Step 2: Research the Water Cycle

Step 3: Create Your Presentation

  • Include at least 5 slides: Title, Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, and Collection.
  • Add labeled images or diagrams for each stage.
  • Write a short narrative from the perspective of a water droplet.
  • Record group narration explaining what happens at each stage.

Step 4: Share and Reflect

  • Present your narrated PowerPoint to the class.
  • Be ready to answer questions about the water cycle and what you learned.

You’ve traveled around the Earth as a drop of water and learned how evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection keep our planet hydrated!

Reflection Questions:

  • Why is the water cycle important for plants, animals, and people?
  • What would happen if one stage didn’t occur?

Enrichment Activity:

Play this online game where you become a water droplet. See how weather patterns connect to the water cycle and how water constantly changes form in nature.

Create a comic strip showing your droplets journey through the water cycle and how the weather changes affect it. You can draw by hand or use google slides.
