Introduction
Plants can grow even without soil! In this simple experiment, you will discover how an onion can sprout new green leaves using only water, sunlight, and time. You will observe its growth over one month and learn about the factors that help plants grow.
Task
Your task is to:
- Grow onion leaves from a peeled onion in a water-based environment.
- Observe and record the onion’s growth for one month.
- Create a journal or sketchbook showing your daily or weekly observations.
- Write a short reflection explaining what you learned about plant growth.
Process
Follow these steps carefully:
- Prepare the onion:
- Peel an onion, but keep the root base intact.
- Do not cut off the bottom where the roots grow.
- Set up the container:
- Place the onion in a plastic cup or small jar.
- Add enough water to touch just the bottom of the onion (roots area).
- Do not soak the whole onion.
- Find a good location:
- Place the cup in a sunny spot, like near a window.
- Make sure it gets daily sunlight.
- Observe and record:
- Check your onion every day.
- Record changes in:
- Leaf growth (height, color)
- Onion color or texture
- Root development (if any)
- You may draw your observations or take pictures weekly.
- Maintain your setup:
- Change the water every 2–3 days to keep it clean.
- Add water when it gets low.
- Reflect:
- After one month, write a short reflection about:
- What changes you noticed
- What helped the onion grow best
- What you learned about plant growth
- After one month, write a short reflection about:

Conclusion
By growing onion leaves in water, you learned that plants can grow even without soil as long as they have water, sunlight, and time. You also discovered how new green shoots emerge from an onion’s root base and how environmental factors affect plant growth. This activity helps you appreciate how plants adapt and continue life even in simple conditions.

Objective:
- To demonstrate vegetative plant growth using hydroponic methods.
- To develop observation, recording, and reflection skills in students.
Materials:
- Onion (with root base intact)
- Plastic cup or small jar
- Clean water
- Pencil, notebook or sketchbook
- Sunlit area
Duration:
- One month (daily or weekly observation)
Expected Outcome:
Students will show understanding of plant growth factors and produce a creative observation journal with reflections.
