Celebrating Our World

Introduction

Hello, explorers!

Our world is full of amazing people, colors, songs, and celebrations. Every culture has special ways of showing joy, love, and community through dancing, singing, or making art.

In this WebQuest, you’ll learn how children around the world celebrate! You’ll listen to their music, look at their art, and discover how their families come together for special traditions. Then, you’ll create something of your own to share what you learned.

Are you ready to travel the world right from our classroom? Let’s begin our celebration journey!

Task

You will:

  1. Work with your group to learn about one culture (Mexico, Japan, Kenya, or the United States)

  2. Watch a short video and look at pictures of children celebrating in that country.

  3. Talk with your group about what makes their traditions special.

  4. Create something that shows what you learned:

    • A drawing or collage using crayons, markers, or digital art.

    • A short song or message recorded on your tablet.

  5. Present your project to the class using the SmartBoard.

When we finish, we’ll have a classroom celebration where we share all the beautiful cultures we explored!

Process

Step 1: Explore

Go to the websites your teacher gives you. Each one shows how kids celebrate with music, art, or dance.

Examples of sites to include:

Step 2: Learn Together

🎨 Draw or paint what you learned.

🎵 Record a short message or song on Flip or Seesaw.

🧑🏾‍💻 Make a picture or collage using a drawing app.

Step 4: Share and Celebrate

Show your project to the class! Tell everyone one new thing you learned about your chosen culture.

Technology Use I used digital tools safely and correctly. I used digital tools with a little help. I needed reminders to use tools safely. I did not use technology correctly.
Conclusion

You did it, world traveler!

You explored how children in different countries celebrate with music, art, and traditions. You listened, watched, created, and shared what you learned and now our classroom has become a celebration of cultures from all around the world.

Think about what you discovered:

  • How are we different?

  • How are we the same?

  • What makes each culture special?

Every culture has something beautiful to share, and by learning about others, we become kinder, more curious, and more connected.

Remember: technology helps us learn about people and places far away, but kindness and respect help us understand one another right here in our classroom. Keep exploring, keep creating, and keep celebrating the world around you!

Teacher Page

This first-grade WebQuest helps students explore cultural diversity through music, art, and technology. It uses age-appropriate media to foster appreciation for different traditions and ways of celebrating. The activity encourages teamwork, creativity, and digital literacy in a culturally supportive environment.

How It Meets Chisholm’s (1998) Six Culturally Supportive Teaching Elements

1. Cultural Awareness:

Students learn that people around the world celebrate in unique and meaningful ways. They begin recognizing and valuing cultural and individual differences.

2. Cultural Relevance:

Students connect new cultural information to familiar experiences like birthdays, songs, and family celebrations. This makes learning meaningful and relatable.

3. Culturally Supportive Environment:

The classroom becomes an inclusive and safe space for exploring global traditions. Students learn respect, empathy, and curiosity about others.

4. Equitable Access:

Students share tablets or computers to view multimedia content and create their projects. Technology is used as an equalizer, ensuring all learners can participate.

5. Instructional Flexibility:

Students express learning in different ways (through drawing, music, or digital storytelling) allowing varied learning preferences to shine.

6. Instructional Integration:

Technology supports learning rather than distracting from it. Students use digital tools to research, create, and share (Chisholm & Wetzel, 2001).

This WebQuest encourages appreciation of diversity and builds foundational global awareness in an engaging, developmentally appropriate way.
