The Neolithic Revolution

Introduction

Today's lesson will help you to understand what the Neolithic Revolution is by investigating how agricultural and sedentary settlements developed.

Task
  1.  Examine: Working in groups visit the Khan Academy and the British Museum 
  2. Evaluate: In groups role play the different members of a different Neolithic society and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of the Neolithic Revolution.
  3. Identify: Contribute to a collective document explaining their role in the Neolithic Revolution.

  2. Using this new information assume the role of an early historian and write a one-page report explaining the major changes the Neolithic Revolution brought to humanity. Your report needs to focus on how the environment influenced this transition.
  3. In small groups you will be able to choose a role such as a Paleolithic hunter-gatherer, Neolithic farmer, modern historian, etc to evaluate the impact of the Neolithic Revolution. In your group discuss changes from your assigned point of view. In your discussion be sure to look at positives and negatives that may occur as the society evolves. 
  4. After you have discussed the pros and cons with your group view the image and answer the questions.

Answer the following questions:

1. Based on the the cite that you explored today, what are the early characteristics of early civilizations?

2. Explain the cause and effect relationship between the development of agriculture and the rise of specialty labor and social classes.

3. How do archaeological findings such as the ziggurate help historians understand the characteristics of early civilizations?
