Introduction
Today in class we will be learning about the water cycle!
Task
1. You will read the passage given about the water cycle.
2. You will be given 7 vocabulary words with their definitions to memorize and understand. These words and definitions can be found in your reading.
3. You will create a flow chart map. On the chart you need to draw each step of the water cycle and label the step.
Evaluation:
You will be asked to answer 3 multiple choice questions and 1 short answer question that comes from your reading.
Process
Passage:
Water is all around us! It's in the oceans, rivers, lakes, and even in the air we breathe. The water cycle is how water moves around the Earth. It's like a big circle that never stops. The water cycle is also called the hydrologic cycle.
The water cycle has different steps. First, there's evaporation. The sun heats up the water in oceans, lakes, and rivers. This heat turns the liquid water into a gas called water vapor. Plants also release water into the air through their leaves, which is called transpiration.
Next comes condensation. As the water vapor goes up into the sky, it gets cooler. The cool air turns the water vapor back into tiny liquid droplets. These droplets join together to make clouds.
When the clouds get full of water, it falls back to Earth as precipitation. Precipitation can be rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The water then collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This is called collection. Then, the whole cycle starts again!
The water cycle is very important. All living things need water to survive. The water cycle also helps to clean the water. When water evaporates, it leaves behind salts and other dirty stuff. The water cycle is always working to keep our planet healthy.
Vocabulary Words with Definitions:
1. Hydrologic Cycle: The continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth.
2. Evaporation: The process where a liquid changes into a gas.
3. Transpiration: The process where plants release water vapor not the air through their leaves.
4. Condensation: The process where a gas changes into a liquid.
5. Precipitation: Any form of water that falls from clouds to the Earth’s surface.
6. Collection: The Process where water gathers in rivers, lakes, and oceans.
7. Water Vapor: Water in its gaseous form.
Flow Chart Map:
Make a flow chart of the 4 steps in the water cycle. Draw it and label what step of the water cycle is occurring in that box.
