Can you make a difference ?

Introduction

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is on.  Australia has assembled it's largest-ever Olympic team to compete amongst security concerns and safety issues with some of the events.

You are requested by The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to travel to Sochi.

Task

This task will run from Week 3 to Week 6 of classes.

Rick Warren refers to 7 pillars of Christian Leadership. They are:

1. Identification (self-awareness of who you are and your vision/ purpose)

2. Clarification (be clear- know what you want to accomplish)

3. Motivation (know who you are trying to please)

4. Collaboration (your task must be focussed on promoting teamwork)

5. Concentration (focus on what is important)

6. Meditation (a quiet space to listen to God and your own thoughts)

7. Relaxation (a time-out space)

You have two choices in this Task.  Either:

1. You are to draft a speech, motivating the Aust Winter Olympic team suitable for broadcast by the international press. OR

2. Alternatively, you can use Google sketchup to redesign one of the Sochi Olympic sites, eg: slopestyle course, athletes' village, Olympic stadium.

Your speech or design must be based on these principles of Christian leadership as above after researching them in the "Process" section of this webquest.

You must read and complete the Process section of this webquest BEFORE starting the Task.

These are some of the current toilet facilities at Sochi Athlete's village.  Surely you can do better !

Process

Firstly, you will need to become familiar with the 7 pillars of Christian Leadership.

Locate and read the following short bible verses that detail Jesus' Leadership.

They are:

1. Identification (self-awareness of who you are and your vision/ purpose). John 8:12. John 5: 25. John 14:6. John 6:35

2. Clarification (be clear- know what you want to accomplish) John 8:14

3. Motivation (know who you are trying to please) John 5: 41,42,43

4. Collaboration (your task must be focussed on promoting teamwork) Mark 3:14

5. Concentration (focus on what is important) Luke 9:51

6. Meditation (a quiet space to listen to God and your own thoughts) Mark 1:35

7. Relaxation (a time-out space) Mark 6:31

By the end of Week 5, you should have read through the webquest, all these verses and be giving serious thought to your speech/design.  You can work as individuals or in pairs.

Secondly,

1. Your written speech will refer to the 7 pillars of leadership and provide examples of how athletes will benefit from each pillar of leadership. OR

2. If you are choosing to design an Olympic site, the design will be labelled with all 7 features that promote the 7 Pillars of Leadership.  For example, if you were redesigning the snowboard half-pipe you would widen it and label the widened part Feature 3 "Motivation- to meet current international standards".  The half-pipe might be re-orientated to take into consideration keeping the angle of the winter sun out of competitor's eyes- Feature 5 "Concentration".

Evaluation

The task is important preparation for your Multiple-choice test later in Term 1.

Most importantly, you will need to be familiar with the 7 Pillars of Christian Leadership and the accompanying Bible verses to be well-prepared for the multiple choice test.

During Week 6, you final work will be checked and you will have an opportunity to share your speeches and designs to the class if you choose.

Conclusion

By now you should have a good knowledge of the 7 Pillars of Christian Leadership and have applied them through speechwriting or creating a design.

"Your leadership is a key ingredient to helping your church become what God has called it to be. In fact, the Bible says this in Proverbs 11:14, “Without wise leadership a nation is in trouble.” That’s true of every single area of life... Learn about leadership from Jesus. We have no better guide." Rick Warren.
