Introduction
You are all well on your way to becoming the “ Fraction Experts” of our school. Why not share your knowledge with others??
In this webquest you will:
*Review fraction basics like parts of a fraction, equivalents and comparing and ordering
*Learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators
*Create a product to show your understandings of the topics above
Task
Task
In a few weeks, our third grade friends will be learning about fractions. While they will not get to do fraction problems as complicated as ours, you can still teach them all there is to know about fractions and even show them some things they will learn about next year in 4th grade.
You and your partner will :
1. Review and learn about fractions on various websites provided
2. Put all your learning into a online book which you will print off to share in the future with the 3rd Grade Class.
Process
Process:
In this process, there will be many different roles that group members must play.
- You are both mathematicians.
Together, you need to visit these sites. Take time to enjoy them all. Remember, you have to be the expert, so these sites are what will teach you so that you can teach others.
*Watch this Video giving a summary about what a fraction is all about:
http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/fractions/fractions.htm
After Watching the Video, push the “X” on the video page and click the “test yourself” button
Record Your score on the Web quest recording sheet
*Equivalent Fractions are Important Too!
Review how they work here: http://www.coolmath4kids.com/fractions/fractions-04-equivalent-01.html
Then, test your knowledge on http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-4/equivalent-fractions
Record your score when you are finished on the recording sheet
One last review… You will have to teach how to compare fractions.
Here’s a nice video to refresh your memory: http://www.mathplayground.com/howto_comparefractions.html
Make sure you understand: http://www.ezschool.com/Games/Math/Fractions/CompareFractions.html (Choose the tenths button)
You and your partner should both take a turn….
OK… REVIEW TIME OVER…. TIME TO LEARN HOW WE ADD AND SUBTRACT FRACTIONS J
Adding Fractions with Like Denominators:

Click “Step by Step”
You may want to record these steps so you remember!
For each step, click the “show me button” for extra explanation

Look at all three pages. Do practice problems at the end! Record answers on the recording sheet.
2. NOW, You did the learning, here’s the fun part!! You are Authors and Illustrators
- See your teacher. She will check your recording sheet from the websites and give you an “OK” to begin your book
- You and your partner will be the author and illustrator of a book. Your teacher just gave you a rough draft template to plan out what your book will say and what pictures you will draw.
- Things to keep in mind for your book:
*You’ll need a title
*You need to give an overview of the things you reviewed in the review section
*Explain adding with like and unlike denominators
*Maybe you want to make this into a story! That’s cool! Just make sure you explain all the things you know about fractions
*Fractions are a lot easier to understand with Pictures aren’t they?? Make sure your book includes good pictures that show equally parts of a whole
- Show your teacher your rough draft book
- Go to http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/stapleless/index.html. Follow the directions to create a book. You will type your words, print, then draw your pictures after printing!
