Understanding Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why giraffes have long necks? Why dinosaurs disappeared? Why some plants thrive in deserts, while others can only live in the forest? These are the kinds of questions that Charles Darwin tried to answer in his Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

This theory changed how people see the living things in Earth. It change over time. The traits that help them survive are passed on, while traits that don’t are slowly lost. From the beaks of finches in the Galápagos Islands to the long necks of giraffes, nature itself is like a teacher, shaping life generation after generation.

In this WebQuest, we will explore Darwin's theory, it's impact and learn how evolution explains the world around us today.

Task

Imagine you are Darwin's travel buddy and keep a travel journal of your scientific adventure. By the end, you will:

1. Introduce who Charles Darwin was and what inspired his ideas.

2. Explain and describe the theory of natural selection in simple steps.

3. Show evidence by finding real examples of evolution in action,

4. Describe the impact of the theory and it's importance today.

5. Share your journal by creating a travel-themed presentation or creative diary that records your discoveries with Darwin.

Process

Follow the steps below in order to complete the quest:

1. Get to Know Darwin

  • Research about Darwin's life and his voyage.
  • Focus on his discoveries in the Galápagos Islands that inspired his theory.

2. Understand the Theory

  • Break down and explain Natural selection into 4 steps:
    • Variation
    • Inheritance
    • Competition
    • Survival of the fittest

3. Gather Evidence

  • Find at least 3 examples of evolution in action

4. Know the Impact

  • Learn how the society in his time reacted to Darwin's theory.
  • Compare how the society view it today.

5. Write your Travel Journal

  • Present your discoveries creatively through a travel diary, slides, poster or short video.
  • Use visuals, simple explanations and examples to make it engaging.
Evaluation
Criteria Excellent (5) Good (3) Fair (2) Poor (1)
Clarity Ideas are very clear and correct. Mostly clear but with few mistakes. Some parts are unclear. Hard to understand and has a lot of mistakes.
Creativity Very creative, visually attractive and engaging. Creative, with some visuals. A little creative with plain parts. Not creative
Examples & Impact 3 examples are explained well and show why the theory matters today. 2-3 examples with some explanations 1-2 examples with little explanation No examples and explanation
Completeness All parts of the task are done in detail. Most parts are done well. Some parts are missing. Most parts are missing.

Conclusion

You have travelled with Darwin and discovered that life on Earth is always changing. Natural selection explains why some species survive while others disappear, and why traits that help living things endure are passed on. Darwin’s theory is more than just a history, it explains the living world around us and reminds us that evolution is still happening today. The journey doesn’t end here. As learners, it’s up to you to keep asking questions and explore how life continues to evolve. See it for yourself!
